Complex materials with strong entanglement of spin-orbital-charge degrees of freedom: the paradigmatic example of transition metal oxides

The aim of these lectures is to provide the students with an introduction to the phenomenology, the fundamental theories and possible applications of correlated materials characterized by a strong entanglement of spin-orbital-charge- lattice degrees of freedom. Particular emphasis will be placed on the variety of physical phenomena in transition metal compounds with 4d and 5d elements. Those compounds stand out as reference point for emergent new phases of matter, which are driven by the competition between the correlated electron physics, largely concerned with the properties of a Mott-insulating state (magnetism, correlated metallic states, quantum criticality, and unconventional superconductivity) and the non-trivial physics induced by moderate to strong spin-orbit coupling (topological phases). During the lectures, the student will be introduced to several analytical methods, ranging from model building schemes to advanced many-body techniques. Part of the course will be devoted to the introduction to theoretical approaches for calculating spin, charge, and orbital structure as well as elementary excitations, which can be obtained by advanced X-ray spectroscopies.
