Objectives
- ACQUIRING BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS AND INFERENCE.
- ACQUIRING STATISTICAL KNOWLEDGE USEFUL FOR MAKING BUSINESS DECISIONS.
- KNOWING STATISTICAL MODELS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS IN REAL CONTEXTS.
- SOME CASE STUDIES ARE ANALYZED, IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO APPLY STATISTICAL INSTRUMENTS IN BUSINESS CONTEXTS AND TO ANALYZE THE ADVANTAGES OF THEIR APPLICATION.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
- KNOWLEDGE OF ANALYSIS OF THE STATISTICAL TOOLS USEFUL FOR THE QUANTITATIVE STUDY OF REAL PHENOMENA, OF ADMINISTRATIVE, ECONOMIC AND MANAGERIAL TYPE, FOR THE UNDERSTANDING OF PROBLEMS AND IMPROVEMENT OF DECISION MAKING PROCESSES.
- KNOWLEDGE OF DESCRIPTIVE-EXPLORATORY AND INFERENTIAL PROCEDURES USEFUL TO SUPPORT DECISIONS REGARDING PHENOMENA AND/OR SYSTEMS WHERE LARGE AMOUNTS OF DATA, VARIABILITY AND UNCERTAINTY IMPLY A LEVEL OF COMPLEXITY UNMANAGEABLE USING OTHER TECHNIQUES.
- ABILITY TO ANALYZE AND INTERPRET QUANTITATIVE INFORMATION, AND TO PRODUCE INDICATORS AND REPORTS SUPPORTING CONTROL AND MANAGEMENT POLICIES OF A COMPANY, BOTH IN PUBLIC OR PRIVATE SECTORS.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
- STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO INDEPENDENTLY ANALYZE AND EVALUATE DOCUMENTS AND REPORTS THAT INCLUDE QUANTITATIVE INFORMATION; FORMULATE CRITICAL JUDGMENTS ON HOW TO COLLECT DATA AND HOW TO PROCESS THE INFORMATION COLLECTED; EVALUATE THE VALIDITY, INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL, OF THE CONCLUSIONS.
- STUDENTS WILL GAIN ABILITY TO PRESENT WITH PROPERTIES OF LANGUAGE, EFFECTIVELY AND CLEARLY, THE INFORMATION OF A QUANTITATIVE NATURE, BOTH IN ORAL AND WRITTEN FORM.
- STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE THE LOGICAL-CONCEPTUAL STRUCTURE NECESSARY FOR THE ANALYSIS AND PROCESSING OF QUANTITATIVE INFORMATION, WHILE PROVIDING THE ABILITY TO LINK THE SKILLS ACQUIRED, EVEN IN MORE ADVANCED COURSES, WITH THOSE LEARNED IN THE COURSES OF STUDY MORE SIMILAR (ECONOMICS, SOCIOLOGY AND POLITICAL SCIENCE).
Prerequisites
MATHEMATICS FOR ECONOMICS (PROPAEDEUTIC)
Contents
PART I, DATA ANALYSIS: STATISTICAL SURVEY, FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTIONS FOR UNIVARIATE DATA, LOCATION MEASURES, SCALE MEASURES, SHAPE MEASURES (SYMMETRY AND KURTOSIS), DISTRIBUTIONS FOR BIVARIATE DATA.

PART II, PROBABILITY: INTRODUCTION TO ELEMENTARY PROBABILITY THEORY, RANDOM VARIABLES (CONTINUOUS AND DISCRETE), BASIC PROBABILITY MODELS.

PART III. INFERENCE: PARAMETRIC ESTIMATION, INTRODUCTION TO ESTIMATION THEORY, POINT ESTIMATION, HYPOTHESIS TESTING, CONFIDENCE INTERVALS, LINEAR MODELS (ESTIMATION AND TESTING)
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF 60 HOURS DIVIDED INTO LECTURES, SUPPLEMENTS AND EXERCISES. DURING THE EXERCISES SOME APPLICATIONS ON REAL DATA ARE ILLUSTRATED.
Verification of learning
STUDENTS' PERFORMANCE IS ASSESSED THROUGH A BOTH WRITTEN AND ORAL COMPREHENSIVE EXAM (POSSIBLY HELD IN DIFFERENT DAYS, THE WRITTEN EXAM IS PREPARATORY TO THE ORAL ONE AND IT IS PUBLISHED ON THE EXAMS TIME-TABLE AVAILABLE ON THE DEPARTMENT WEBSITE).
THE WRITTEN EXAM IS 90 MINUTES IN DURATION (MINIMUM), AND IS AIMED AT ASSESSING – IN A TRANSPARENT AND OBJECTIVE MANNER – STUDENTS' KNOWLEDGE OF THE KEY ISSUES PROVIDED DURING THE COURSE AS WELL AS THEIR ABILITY OF APPLYING SUCH CONCEPTS. IT CONSISTS OF TWO PARTS. IN THE FIRST THERE ARE SOME EXERCISES, RELATED TO THE DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS, PROBABILITY, RANDOM VARIABLES, STATISTICAL INFERENCE AND LINEAR REGRESSION. THE SECOND PART CONSISTS OF SOME QUESTION (OPEN AND/OR MULTIPLE CHOICE) ON THEORETICAL ARGUMENTS. EACH EXERCISES AND QUESTION HAS A SCORE: IN PARTICULAR THE MAXIMUM GRADE FOR THE FIRST PART IS 22 AMD THAT OF THE SECOND PART IS 8. THE WRITTEN EXAM IS PASSED WITH A MINIMUM GRADE EQUAL TO 18. THE GRADE IS GIVEN BY THE SUM OF THE SCORE OF ALL QUESTIONS/EXERCISES.
BOOKS, LECTURE NOTES, COMPUTERS, MOBILE PHONES, TABLETS AND SMARTPHONES ARE ALL FORBIDDEN DURING THE WRITTEN EXAM. ONLY HAND CALCULATORS ARE ALLOWED.
THE ORAL EXAM IS ABOUT 20 MINUTES IN DURATION. IT INCLUDES THE DISCUSSION OF THE WRITTEN ANSWERS AS WELL AS POSSIBLE QUESTIONS ON OTHER ITEMS ON THE PROGRAMME, AND IS ALSO INTENDED AT FILLING THE GAP DURING THE WRITTEN EXAM, AND ASSESSING STUDENTS' ABILITY OF USING APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE AND TERMS.
THE GRADE OF THE ORAL COMPREHENSIVE EXAM RANGES FROM -4 (NEGATIVE GRADE) TO A MAXIMUM GRADE EQUAL TO 4.

More Information
GIVEN THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DISCIPLINE, BOTH FOR THE THEORETICAL AND THE PRACTICAL PART, THE ATTENDANCE IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED, ALTHOUGH NOT MANDATORY. THE STUDENTS WHO DO NOT ATTEND THE COURSE MUST PREPARE THEMSELVES ATTENDING THE PLANNED SCHEDULE.
