TALKING ABOUT GOD IN THE MIDDLE AGES
THE MIDDLE AGES' THOUGHT, BETWEEN VTH AND XITH CENTURIES, STRUCTURALLY FACES AN ENORMOUS PROBLEM: IS IT POSSIBLE TO SAY WITH HUMAN WORDS, OR BETTER WITH PHILOSOPHICAL WORDS, 'WHAT' THE CHRISTIAN GOD IS AND 'WHICH' HIS CHARACTERISTICS ARE? IN THE FACE OF THIS STRUGGLE, ARE ARISTOTLE'S CATEGORIES AND THE OTHER STRUCTURES OF RATIONAL THINKING CAPABLE OF SATISFACTORY RESULTS, OR THE FINAL OUTCOME IS A MYSTIC AND CONTEMPLATIVE SILENCE? THE COURSE WILL DISCUSS THE SOLUTIONS OF SOME OF THE MORE IMPORTANT MEDIEVAL THINKERS, SUCH AS AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO, BOETHIUS, JOHN SCOTTUS ERIUGENA AND ANSELM OF AOSTA.
