Objectives
OVERALL OBJECTIVE

THE COURSE HAS THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE TO PROVIDE THE STUDENTS WITH SPECIFIC AND FOCUSED KNOWLEDGES ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE WESTERN PHILOSOPHICAL THOUGHT BETWEEN V AND XIV CENTURY.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

THE STUDENT WILL:
- KNOW SOME SPECIFIC AND PECULIAR ELEMENTS OF THE WESTERN PHILOSOPHICAL THOUGHT BETWEEN V AND XV CENTURY, WITH PECULIAR FOCUS ON THE MAIN AUTHORS OF THE TIME
- KNOW SOME SPECIFIC AND PECULIAR ELEMENTS OF THE WESTERN HISTORIOGRAPHICAL DEBATE ABOUT THIS SPECULATIVE PERIOD
- KNOW THE ‘CLASSIC’ PHILOSOPHICAL WORKS OF THIS TIME, THROUGH FULL OR ANTHOLOGICAL READING
- KNOW THE MATTER’S SPECIFIC METHODOLOGIES IN THEIR LINKS WITH THE ONES OF PALEOGRAPHY, PHILOLOGY, MEDIEVAL HISTORY, HISTORY OF CHRISTENDOM ETC.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

THE STUDENT WILL:
- SITUATE THE MAIN AUTHORS OF MIDDLE AGES PHILOSOPHY IN THEIR PECULIAR HISTORICAL, RELIGIOUS AND CULTURAL CONTEXT
- LINK THE COMPETENCIES OF PHILOSOPHICAL, HISTORICAL AND THEOLOGICAL FIELDS FOR A BETTER COMPREHENSION OF THE COURSE’S THEMES
- USE THE BASIC ELEMENTS OF THE LATIN PHILOSOPHICAL VOCABULARY OF THE TIME
- INDEPENDENTLY DEVELOP, THANKS TO THE DEBATE WITH TEACHER AND OTHER STUDENTS, THE POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO THE ISSUES OF THE COURSE

AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT

THE STUDENT WILL:
- IDENTIFY PRIORITIES AND RELEVANT ISSUES WITHIN GENERAL THEMES
- EXPRESS AUTONOMOUS JUDGMENTS ON AUTHORS AND THEMES STUDIED, EVEN ON SPECIFIC MATTERS
- MAKE AN EPISTEMOLOGICAL EVALUATION ABOUT THE POSSIBLE USE OF THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGES AND OF THEIR METHODOLOGIES IN THE CONTEMPORARY CONTEST
- OBSERVE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE THOUGHT OF THE MIDDLE AGES AND THE ONES OF THE PREVIOUS AND FURTHER AGES

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

THE STUDENT WILL:
- COMMUNICATE THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, BOTH IN SPECIALIZED AND DIDACTIC FORM, ALSO WITH THE HELP OF INFORMATICS EQUIPMENT
- READ THE MIDDLE-AGES LATIN PHILOSOPHICAL TEXTS IN A CORRECT AND HISTORICALLY APPROPRIATE MANNER
- SHOW AND EXPLAIN, THROUGH WRITTEN TEXTS OR COMPUTER MATERIALS, THE RESULTS OF ITS OWN RESEARCHES AND EVALUATIONS
- BE SKILLED IN TEAM WORKS
LEARNING ABILITIES

THE STUDENT WILL:
- AUTONOMOUSLY USE THE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC RESOURCES AND THE NEW ONLINE DATABASES
- ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGES USEFUL TO CONTINUE THE STUDIES AND TO CONTEXTUALIZE LEARNING CONTENTS OF THE OTHER CHRONOLOGICAL PHASES OF PHILOSOPHY’S HISTORY
- CONDUCT RESEARCH ACTIVITY, UNDERSTAND AND EXPLAIN WRITTEN TEXTS OF THE MIDDLE AGES
- CONTINUOUSLY UPDATE HIS KNOWLEDGES, USING THE SPECIFIC SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE

READINGS OF THE BIBLE IN THE MIDDLE AGES
THE HOLY SCRIPTURE IS THE BASIS OF THE THEOLOGICAL-PHILOSOPHICAL REFLECTION OF THE MIDDLE AGES: WITHOUT KNOWING ITS CONTENT, THE MIDDLE AGES’ THOUGHT IS NEAR TO BE UNINTELLIGIBLE. AFTER A PRESENTATION OF THE BIBLE AS HISTORICAL AND LITERARY SOURCE, THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON SOME OF THE MOST FAMOUS READING ON ONE OF ITS MORE PHILOSOPHICAL TEXTS: THE INCIPIT OF JOHN’S GOSPEL, INTERPRETED AS THE EXPLANATION OF A POINT OF CONTACT BETWEEN HUMAN AND DIVINE WORLD
