Objectives
GENERAL OBJECTIVE:
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE THEMATIC, THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL BASES FOR THE STUDY OF THE HISTORY OF ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY, ALSO TAKING INTO ACCOUNT ANY COGNITIVE DEFICIENCIES IDENTIFIABLE IN THE PREPARATION PROVIDED ON THESE TOPICS AND IN THESE AREAS BY THE HIGH SCHOOL (IN PARTICULAR IN RELATION TO LATE ANTIQUITY, THE MIDDLE AGES AND EARLY HUMANISM).

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE STUDENT:
- WILL KNOW THE DISCIPLINARY FOUNDATIONS HISTORY OF ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY;
- WILL BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE THE PECULIARITIES OF THE WAYS OF THINKING DETERMINED BY CULTURAL, POLITICAL, IDEOLOGICAL AND RELIGIOUS INFLUENCES TYPICAL OF THE EPOCHS TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION BY THE COURSE.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- EXAMINE, COMPARE AND CRITICALLY EVALUATE THE AUTHORS AND ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHICAL TRADITIONS SPECIFICALLY EXAMINED IN THE COURSE IN RELATION TO MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY THOUGHT;
- UNDERSTAND THE GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VARIOUS ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHICAL TRADITIONS;
- READ, INTERPRET AND CRITICALLY EVALUATE THE TEXTS OF ANCIENT, LATE-ANCIENT, MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE THINKERS.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- EVALUATE THE FUNDAMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS OF DIFFERENT PHILOSOPHICAL AND CULTURAL TRADITIONS, MAKING USE OF ADEQUATE TOOLS IN ORDER TO APPRECIATE AND INTERPRET ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL THEMES, PROBLEMS AND PRODUCTS IN THEIR SPECIFICITY;
- TO EVALUATE THE FUNDAMENTAL INFLUENCES THAT ANCIENT THOUGHT EXERCISED ON THE WESTERN CULTURAL TRADITION.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- REPRESENT AND COMMUNICATE, BY MEANS OF TEXTS OR VIRTUAL INSTRUMENTS, THE RESULTS OF OWN RESEARCH OR ELABORATIONS FROM BOTH A HISTORICAL-PHILOSOPHICAL AND A THEORETICAL POINT OF VIEW;
- REPORT, EXHIBIT, INFORM ON PHILOSOPHICAL THEMES AND TERMINOLOGIES DEVELOPED IN ANTIQUITY AND IN THE MIDDLE AGES;
- INCREASE AND REFINE HIS/HER OWN LANGUAGE ON PHILOSOPHICAL-SCIENTIFIC THEMES IN PARTICULAR AND ON INTELLECTUAL ACTIVITIES IN GENERAL WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL SOURCES.

LEARNING ABILITY:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- USE BASIC AND TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS AS WELL AS ANALYSIS AND ARCHIVING COMPUTER RESOURCES;
- CARRY OUT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET COMPLEX TEXTS OF VARIOUS KINDS;
- TO USE THE PHILOSOPHICAL SKILLS ACQUIRED ON THE BASIS OF AN ADEQUATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY IN ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL AGES TO ENSURE A BETTER APPROACH TO THE STUDY OF HISTORY, LITERATURE, ARTS AND, IN GENERAL, OF WESTERN CULTURE.

ANCIENT PHILOSOPHY: THE COURSE WILL DEAL WITH THE MAIN THEMES OF ANCIENT AND LATE ANCIENT THOUGHT, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE PRE-SOCRATIC TRADITION (5 HOURS), TO THE SOPHISTIC DOCTRINES (3 HOURS), TO THE SOCRATIC REFLECTION (2 HOURS), TO THE PLATONIC (5 HOURS) AND ARISTOTELIAN THOUGHT (5 HOURS), TO THE HELLENISTIC PHILOSOPHIES (5 HOURS), AND TO THE NEOPLATONIC PHILOSOPHICAL TRADITION, PAGAN AND CHRISTIAN (5 HOURS).

MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY:
IN THE COURSE, THINKERS AND THE CHARACTERISTIC DOCTRINES OF THE HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHICAL THINKING BETWEEN II AND XIV CENTURY WILL BE ANALYZED
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF 60 HOURS OF LECTURES, ALSO WITH THE SUPPORT OF GUIDED READING OF TEXTS
Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF AN ORAL EXAMINATION WHICH AIMS TO ASCERTAIN STUDENT'S PREPARATION AND HER/HIS CAPABILITY TO USE THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO STUDENT'S EXPOSITION SKILLS AND TO HER/HIS CAPABILITY TO ANSWER IN A CLEAR AND PRECISE WAY IN ORDER TO SHOW HER/HIS ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE IN TERMS OF CONTENT AND METHOD.
