THEMES AND PROBLEMS OF GREEK PALAEOGRAPHY IN RELATIONSHIP WITH ANCIENT TEXTUAL TRANSMISSION AND MATERIAL RECEPTION: THE BIGGEST TURNING POINTS OF THE HISTORY OF HANDWRITING IN BYZANTIUM FROM LATE ANTIQUITY TO HUMANISM. - AFTER A METHODOLOGICAL INTRODUCTION, THE COURSE WILL CONSIDER SOME OUTSTANDING PERIODS OF THE GREEK WRITING CULTURE: 1) ASPECTS OF MANUSCRIPT PRODUCTION IN THE MAJUSCULE CANONS BETWEEN 4TH AND 9TH CENTURY; 2) THE ORIGIN OF GREEK MINUSCULE SCRIPT AND THE FATE OF ANCIENT LITERATURE IN BYZANTIUM BETWEEN 8TH AND 9TH/10TH CENTURY; 3) OFFICIALS AND MANUSCRIPT SCRIBES BETWEEN 11TH AND 12TH CENTURY; 4) PROFANE LITERATURE AND ITS MATERIAL RECEPTION DURING THE PALAEOLOGAN RENAISSANCE (13TH-14TH CENTURIES); 5) BYZANTIUM AND ITALY IN THE 15TH CENTURY: SCRIBES AND SCHOLARS IN THE LAST BYZANTINE ERA AND IN THE HUMANISM. |

LESSONS WILL INCLUDE BOTH A PART OF THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF DISPLAY FACSIMILES OF HANDWRITINGS SUCH AS ELEMENTS OF MATERIAL ANALYSIS AND COLLATION OF MANUSCRIPT WITNESSES. THE EXPOSITION OF THE CONTENTS SUBTENDS A STRONG INTERACTION WITH RELATED SCIENTIFICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL AREAS (BYZANTINE CIVILIZATION, CLASSICAL PHILOLOGY, ANCIENT HISTORY, MEDIAEVAL HISTORY, DISCIPLINES OF THE BOOK AND THE DOCUMENT). |

LEARNING CHECK DURING THE EXERCISES AND THROUGH A FINAL ORAL EXAMINATION ON THE THEMES OF THE LESSONS. THE CRITERIA OF JUDGMENT WILL INCLUDE A DEEP EVALUATION ON THE ACQUIRED LEARNING ABILITIES (READING OF FACSIMILES AND EXPOSURE OF THE PRINCIPAL PALAEOGRAPHICAL THEMES), ON THE EMPLOYMENT OF A HIGH TECHNICAL LANGUAGE, AS WELL AS ON THE ABILITY INTO FRAMING THE GRAPHIC PHENOMENON IN ITS CULTURE-HISTORICAL CONTEXT. |
