Objectives
EXPECTED LEARNING RESULTS. 1. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE ANCIENT GREEK LANGUAGE (VOCABULARY, MORPHOLOGY, SYNTAX, PROSODY, METRE), AS ATTESTED BY LITERARY TEXTS; THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORY OF GREEK LITERATURE, FROM VIII CENT. BCE TO VI CENT. CE IN THE FRAME OF ANCIENT GREEK CULTURE, WITH SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE OCCASIONS AND MODES OF PERFORMANCES, GENRES, CONTENTS AND FORMS, EVOLUTION OF THE COMMUNICATIONAL AND HISTORIC-LITERARY CONTEXTS; KNOWLEDGE OF THE BASIC RESEARCH METHODS AND TOOLS OF THE HISTORY OF LITERATURE IN THIS PARTICULAR CHRONOLOGICAL PERIOD, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE ONLINE RESOURCES; ABILITY TO COPE WITH THE PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTIVES OF THE HISTORY OF THE GREEK LITERATURE AND TO UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN LITERATURE AND OTHER COMPONENTS OF GREEK CULTURE (SCIENCE, MUSIC, PHILOSOPHY, FINE ARTS), WITHIN THE GENERAL FRAMEWORK OF SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC HISTORY OF THE ANCIENT WORLD. 2. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING. A) IN SPECIFIC CONTEXTS OF STUDY: ABILITY TO ANALYSE AND UNDERSTAND WITH ACCURACY THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LANGUAGE, LITERATURE AND OTHER COMPONENTS OF GREEK CULTURE (SCIENCE, MUSIC, PHILOSOPHY, FINE ARTS); ABILITY TO IDENTIFY PERSONAL THEME-BASED ROUTES, AND START SELF-LEARNING PROCESSES IN SPECIFIC FIELDS OF RESEARCH; B) IN MORE GENERAL STUDY AND/OR WORK CONTEXTS: TO DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO ANALYSE COMPLEX SITUATIONS.

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO 22 LECTURES OF 2 HOURS EACH AND 1 LECTURE OF 1 HOUR (45 HOURS IN TOTAL); THE LECTURES WILL BE DEVOTED TO READING, IN THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE, TRANSLATION INTO ITALIAN, TEXTUAL AND LITERARY ANALYSIS, EXEGETICAL AND HISTORICAL-LITERARY COMMENTARY OF THE TEXTS INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAMME (SEE “CONTENUTI DEL CORSO, 3.”). DURING THE LECTURES, STUDENTS WILL BE INVOLVED INTO DISCUSSIONS ON TEXTS AND TEXTUAL PROBLEMS. ATTENDANCE AT THESE LECTURES IS NOT COMPULSORY. THOSE STUDENTS WHO DECIDE NOT TO ATTEND THE LECTURES MUST ANYWAY STUDY THE CONTENTS OF THEM, AS WELL AS THE REFERENCE TEXTS. THE LECTURES WILL BE DELIVERED IN ITALIAN; DURING THEM NUMEROUS TEXTS IN ANCIENT GREEK WILL BE READ, TRANSLATED INTO ITALIAN AND COMMENTED ON. Verification of learning
IN ORDER TO CERTIFY THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES, IT IS REQUIRED TO PASS AN EXAM, WHICH WILL CONSIST IN A DISCUSSION OF ABOUT 40 MINUTES ON THE CONTENTS OF THE COURSE AND ON THE ADOPTED TEXTS (SEE THE SECTION “TESTI ADOTTATI”). GRADES ARE EXPRESSED ON A SCALE OF 30: THE MINIMUM SCORE TO PASS THE EXAM IS 18/30. DURING THE EXAM, THE FOLLOWING WILL BE EVALUATED: 1. CORRECTNESS AND ACCURACY OF INFORMATION; 2. ABILITY TO ANSWER QUESTIONS PERTINENTLY AND ACCURATELY; 3. ABILITY TO RELATE CLEARLY, SHOWING ACCURACY AND ADEQUATE LANGUAGE SKILLS; 4. ABILITY TO ARTICULATE COMPLEX DISCUSSIONS COHERENTLY; 5. ABILITY TO PLACE THE HISTORICAL-LITERARY PHENOMENA IN WIDER HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXTS; 6. ABILITY TO SYNTESISE. STUDENTS WHO WON’T HAVE DEMONSTRATED AN ADEQUATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS ADDRESSED DURING THE COURSE, WITH REFERENCE TO THE PARAMETERS LISTED ABOVE, WON’T PASS THE EXAM. THOSE WHO WILL HAVE DEMONSTRATED SUCH A KNOWLEDGE, WILL BE AWARDED WITH GRADES FROM 18/30 TO 30/30 CUM LAUDE, DEPENDING ON THE LEVEL OF UNDERSTANDING OF THE TOPICS AND OF PERSONAL CRITICAL DEVELOPMENT; THE ‘CUM LAUDE’ GRADE WILL BE AWARDED TO THOSE WHO WILL HAVE DEMONSTRATED EXCELLENT MASTERY AND GIVEN PERSONAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE TOPICS.
