THE COURSE AIMS TO CONSOLIDATE STUDENTS’ KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORY OF THE GREEK LANGUAGE AND ITS DIALECTS, AND TO PROVIDE THEM WITH SPECIFIC TOOLS FOR THE CRITICAL ANALYSIS AND UNDERSTANDING OF GREEK LITERARY TEXTS IN PROSE AND POETRY AND FOR BIBLIOGRAPHICAL RESEARCH IN THE FIELD. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING STUDENTS WILL -DEEPEN THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF THE ANCIENT GREEK LANGUAGE (VOCABULARY, PHONOLOGY, MORPHOLOGY, SYNTAX, PROSODY, METRICS) AND OF ITS HISTORY, AS ATTESTED BY LITERARY TEXTS AND SOME EPIGRAPHIC TEXTS (8TH CENTURY B.C.-6TH CENTURY A.D.); -ACQUIRE ADVANCED SKILLS IN THE STUDY OF THE HISTORY OF GREEK LITERARY LANGUAGES, WITH PARTICULAR REGARD TO THE PHONOLOGICAL, MORPHOLOGICAL, PROSODIC, METRICAL, SYNTACTIC AND CONTENT ASPECTS OF AN ADEQUATE NUMBER OF TEXTS; -KNOW THE BASIC METHODOLOGIES AND THE ESSENTIAL TOOLS OF HISTORICAL-LINGUISTIC RESEARCH IN THIS PARTICULAR CHRONOLOGICAL FIELD, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO TELEMATIC RESOURCES; -ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO ORIENT THEMSELVES AMONG THE PROBLEMS AND PERSPECTIVES OF THE DISCIPLINE, TO UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE, AND BETWEEN THESE AND THE OTHER COMPONENTS OF CULTURE (SCIENCE, MUSIC, PHILOSOPHY, FIGURATIVE ARTS), WITHIN THE GENERAL FRAMEWORK OF THE SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC HISTORY OF THE ANCIENT WORLD. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING STUDENTS WILL HONE THEIR CRITICAL SKILLS IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: -ANALYSIS AND COMPREHENSION, TRANSLATION AND COMMENTARY ON GREEK LITERARY TEXTS IN PROSE AND POETRY, PROVIDING SCIENTIFICALLY BASED HISTORICAL-LINGUISTIC EXPLANATIONS; -TACKLING THE HISTORICAL-LINGUISTIC, INTERPRETATIVE, PHILOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL-CRITICAL PROBLEMS POSED BY GREEK LITERARY TEXTS; -ORIENTING ONESELF AMONG PROBLEMS AND RESEARCH PERSPECTIVES IN THE FIELD OF THE HISTORY OF THE GREEK LANGUAGE AND ITS DIALECTS; -UNDERSTANDING WITH PRECISION AND BREADTH OF PERSPECTIVE THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE HISTORY OF THE LANGUAGE AND THE OTHER COMPONENTS OF GREEK CULTURE (SCIENCE, MUSIC, PHILOSOPHY, FIGURATIVE ARTS), WITHIN THE GENERAL FRAMEWORK OF THE SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC HISTORY OF THE ANCIENT WORLD; -INVESTIGATING, ALSO IN COLLABORATION WITH OTHER STUDENTS, INTO SPECIFIC ASPECTS OF THE DISCIPLINE; -SETTING UP BIBLIOGRAPHICAL RESEARCH, ALSO USING TELEMATIC TOOLS; -REFLECTING CRITICALLY AND INDEPENDENTLY ON SPECIFIC ASPECTS AND PROBLEMS OF THE HISTORY OF THE GREEK LANGUAGE. MAKING JUDGEMENTS STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: -ORIENT THEMSELVES AUTONOMOUSLY WITHIN THE CRITICAL DEBATE ON HISTORY OF GREEK LANGUAGE; -TRY TO IDENTIFY PERSONAL PATHS OF INVESTIGATION ON SPECIFIC PROBLEMS; -HAVE A CRITICAL APPROACH TO GREEK LITERARY TEXTS AND THE VARIOUS CONTEXTS OF THEIR TRANSMISSION, AND REFLECT ON THEM IN AN AUTONOMOUS AND SCIENTIFICALLY FOUNDED MANNER. COMMUNICATION SKILLS STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: -COMMUNICATE, IN A CLEAR, CORRECT, ORDERLY MANNER AND IN APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE, TO BOTH SPECIALISTS AND NON-SPECIALISTS, THE CONTENT OF THE DISCIPLINE, ITS PROBLEMS AND THEIR OWN PERSONAL REFLECTIONS ON IT; -COMMUNICATE THE RESULTS OF THE ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF GREEK LITERARY TEXTS; -COLLABORATE WITH OTHER SCHOLARS IN RESEARCH GROUPS IN THE HUMANITIES. LEARNING SKILLS STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: -MASTER THE CONTENT AND RESEARCH TOOLS OF THE DISCIPLINE SO AS TO BE ABLE TO CONTINUE THEIR STUDIES INDEPENDENTLY; -DELVE INTO THE STUDY OF TEXTS, AUTHORS, GENRES, AND HISTORICAL PERIODS OF THE HISTORY OF GREEK LANGUAGE IN A PERSONAL WAY. |

OUTLINES OF THE HISTORY OF THE GREEK LITERARY LANGUAGES: EPIC POETRY, LYRIC POETRY (MONODIC AND CHORAL), ELEGY AND IAMBUS, TRAGEDY AND COMEDY, THE PHILOSOPHICAL AND PROSE HISTORIOGRAPHY; THE KOINÈ; HELLENISTIC LITERATURE. 2. READING, TRANSLATION INTO ITALIAN, HISTORIC-LINGUISTIC COMMENTARY OF A NUMBER OF SELECTED GREEK (AND, ON OCCASIONS, LATIN) TEXTS. THE ANALYSIS AND EXPLANATION OF THE METRIC STRUCTURE WILL BE AN INTEGRAL - AND INDISPENSABLE - PART OF THE READING AND INTERPRETATION OF THE POETIC TEXTS. (SEE REFERENCE TEXTS). |

THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO 22 LECTURES OF 2 HOURS EACH AND 1 OF 1 HOUR (45 HOURS IN TOTAL); THEY WILL BE DEVOTED TO READING, IN THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE, TRANSLATION INTO ITALIAN, TEXTUAL AND LITERARY ANALYSIS, EXEGETICAL AND HISTORICAL-LITERARY COMMENTARY OF THE TEXTS INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAMME (SEE “CONTENUTI DEL CORSO, 3.”). DURING THE LECTURES, STUDENTS WILL BE INVOLVED INTO DISCUSSIONS ON TEXTS AND TEXTUAL PROBLEMS. ATTENDANCE AT THESE LECTURES, THOUGH HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, IS NOT COMPULSORY. THOSE STUDENTS WHO DECIDE NOT TO ATTEND THE LECTURES MUST ANYWAY STUDY THE CONTENTS OF THEM, AS WELL AS THE REFERENCE TEXTS. THE LECTURES WILL BE DELIVERED IN ITALIAN; DURING THEM NUMEROUS TEXTS IN ANCIENT GREEK WILL BE READ, TRANSLATED INTO ITALIAN AND COMMENTED ON. FOR ATTENDING AND NON ATTENDING STUDENTS, IN ORDER TO CERTIFY THAT THEY ACHIEVED THE TEACHING OBJECTIVE, IT IS REQUIRED TO PASS AN EXAM, WHICH WILL CONSIST IN A DISCUSSION OF ABOUT 40 MINUTES ON THE CONTENTS OF THE COURSE AND ON THE ADOPTED TEXTS (SEE THE SECTION “TESTI ADOTTATI”). THE DISCUSSION WILL START WITH A TOPIC PROPOSED BY THE CANDIDATE. METRICAL READING OF THE POETIC TEXTS IS MANDATORY. GRADES ARE EXPRESSED ON A SCALE OF 30: THE MINIMUM SCORE TO PASS THE EXAM IS 18/30. DURING THE EXAM, THE FOLLOWING WILL BE EVALUATED: 1. CORRECTNESS AND ACCURACY OF INFORMATION; 2. ABILITY TO ANSWER QUESTIONS PERTINENTLY AND ACCURATELY; 3. ABILITY TO SPEAK CLEARLY, SHOWING ACCURACY AND ADEQUATE LANGUAGE SKILLS; 4. ABILITY TO RELATE CLEARLY, SHOWING ACCURACY AND ADEQUATE LANGUAGE SKILLS; 5. ABILITY TO PLACE THE HISTORICAL-LINGUISTIC PHENOMENA IN WIDER HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXTS; 6. ABILITY TO SYNTESISE. STUDENTS WHO WON’T HAVE DEMONSTRATED AN ADEQUATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS ADDRESSED DURING THE COURSE, WITH REFERENCE TO THE PARAMETERS LISTED ABOVE, WON’T PASS THE EXAM. THOSE WHO WILL HAVE DEMONSTRATED SUCH A KNOWLEDGE, WILL BE AWARDED WITH GRADES FROM 18/30 TO 30/30 CUM LAUDE, DEPENDING ON THE LEVEL OF UNDERSTANDING OF THE TOPICS AND OF PERSONAL CRITICAL DEVELOPMENT; THE ‘CUM LAUDE’ GRADE WILL BE AWARDED TO THOSE WHO WILL HAVE DEMONSTRATED EXCELLENT MASTERY AND GIVEN PERSONAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE TOPICS. |
