Objectives
THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE LANGUAGE AND THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF GENERAL CHEMISTRY.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
ACQUISITION OF THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF CHEMISTRY, IN PARTICULAR AS CONCERNS THE STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF MATTER, THE PRINCIPLES OF CHEMICAL REACTIVITY AND THE TECHNIQUES THAT ALLOW TO DESCRIBE AND PREDICT THE PERFORMANCE OF THE CHEMICAL REACTIONS.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO PERFORM THE CALCULATIONS NECESSARY TO STUDY THE DIFFERENT CLASSES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS. HE/SHE WILL BE ALSO ABLE TO EVALUATE THE TRANSFORMATIONS OF MATTER, AND APPLY THE CORRECT THEORETICAL INTERPRETATION.
Prerequisites
IT IS REQUIRED THAT STUDENTS HAVE A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE BASIC MATH TOPICS COVERED IN HIGH SCHOOL. IN PARTICULAR, KNOWLEDGE OF ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA, METHODS FOR SOLVING EQUATIONS AND INEQUALITIES OF FIRST AND SECOND DEGREE, AND LOGARITHMS ARE REQUIRED.

MATTER, THE ATOMS AND MOLECULES. CHEMICAL ELEMENTS: THE PERIODIC TABLE. TYPE AND CLASSIFICATION OF CHEMICAL BONDS. THE STATES OF AGGREGATION OF MATTER. SOLUTIONS. CHEMICAL REACTIONS. ACIDS, BASES AND SALTS. ENERGY CHEMISTRY. BALANCE. FUNDAMENTALS OF KINETICS. ELECTROCHEMISTRY.

STOICHIOMETRY:
ATOM, ATOMIC MASS, MOLECULES, MOLECULAR MASS, IONIC COMPOUNDS, MASS FORMULA. FORMULA MINIMUM AND MOLECULAR FORMULA. ISOTOPIC COMPOSITION. THE MOLE. CHEMICAL EQUATIONS NOT REDOX, BALANCE. REDOX REACTIONS, BALANCE. WEIGHT RATIOS VOLUMETRIC AND REACTIONS. YIELD OF A REACTION. GAS SYSTEMS. SOLUTIONS. CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIA.
Teaching Methods
LECTURES (4 CFU = 32 HOURS) AND STOICHIOMETRY EXERCISES (2 CFU = 24 HOURS).
Verification of learning
BOTH WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMINATIONS ARE REQUIRED. THE ORAL EXAMINATION CAN BE ACCESSED ONLY AFTER A POSITIVE RESULT OF THE WRITTEN TEST (MINIMUM OF 18 POINTS ACQUIRED).

WRITTEN EXAMINATION OF STOICHIOMETRY: THE TEST CONSISTS IN THE RESOLUTION OF 4 STOICHIOMETRY EXERCISES ON THE TOPICS STUDIED DURING THE TEACHING CLASS, IN A TIME OF 2 HOURS.

ORAL TEST: THE ORAL EXAMINATION IS NORMALLY SCHEDULED FEW DAYS AFTER THE WRITTEN TEST AND INCLUDES A BRIEF DISCUSSION OF THE RESULTS OF THE WRITTEN TEST, AND AT LEAST TWO QUESTIONS ABOUT OTHER TOPICS OF THE PROGRAM. STUDENTS HAVE TO DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING OF SELECTED TOPICS AND ADEQUATE LANGUAGE SKILLS.
