Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS AT INTRODUCING STUDENTS TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS AND THE NEED FOR A “GREEN ECONOMY" THROUGH THE ILLUSTRATION OF THE PRINCIPLES AND METRICS OF GREEN CHEMISTRY AND EXAMPLES RELATED TO CHEMICAL PROCESSES BOTH ON LABORATORY AND INDUSTRIAL SCALE.

THE MAIN KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED WILL BE:
-BASIC PRINCIPLES OF GREEN CHEMISTRY AND THEIR PRACTICAL APPLICATION;
-KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE USE OF SAFE AND "BENIGN" CHEMICALS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT;
-MAIN RENEWABLE NATURAL SOURCES ALTERNATIVE TO OIL AND COAL FOR THE PRODUCTION OF CHEMICALS AND ENERGY;
-EXAMPLES OF ENERGETICALLY EFFICIENT PROCESSES;
-ALTERNATIVE REACTION CONDITIONS.

THE MAIN CAPABILITIES WILL BE:
-TO EVALUATE SYNTHETIC PROTOCOLS AND INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES IN TERMS OF THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT AND HEALTH RISKS;
-TO DEVELOP CHEMICAL PROCESSES WITH A LOW ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT.

-RENEWABLE RAW MATERIALS OF PLANT ORIGIN. BIOMASS: DEFINITIONS AND CLASSIFICATION. (LESSONS 4H)
-CHANGE IN THE RAW MATERIALS USED BY THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY AND THE ROLE OF BIOMASS. (LESSONS 4H)
-CHEMICAL PRODUCTS FROM BIOMASS. USE OF BIOMASS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ENERGY, OF LIQUID BIO-FUELS (ETHANOL - METHANOL - BIODIESEL - METHANE) AND GASEOUS FUELS (SYNGAS, BIOGAS). (LESSONS 10H)
-PARALLELISM BETWEEN REFINERIES AND BIOREFINERIES. (LESSONS 4H)
-EXAMPLES OF SUCCESSFUL GREEN TECHNOLOGIES. (LESSONS 4H)
-EXAMPLES OF ORGANIC SYNTHESIS CHEMISTRY PROCESSES AND POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVES DESCRIBED IN THE RECENT CHEMICAL LITERATURE.(LESSONS 4H)
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS PRESENTED IN A STANDARD FORMAT OF LECTURES (48 HOURS).
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF COURSE OBJECTIVES IS VERIFIED BY AN ORAL EXAMINATION IN WHICH SOME QUESTIONS ON THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE COURSE WILL BE ASKED. DISCUSSION (MAXIMUM OF 40 MINUTES) IS AIMED TO ASSESS:
- THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENT OF THE COURSE
- THE LEVEL OF COMPETENCE ACQUIRED IN SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE, IN LOGIC CAPACITY AND ABILITY TO SUMMARIZE ALL THE ANSWERS.
EVALUATION IS IN 30/30. MINIMUM SCORE (18/30) WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH SUPERFICIAL KNOWLEDGE AND LIMITED COMPREHENSION OF BASIC TOPICS AS WELL AS SUFFICIENT CLARITY SKILLS.
MAXIMUM SCORE (30/30) WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH DEEP KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION OF TOPICS AS WELL AS RIGOROUS CLARITY SKILLS.
SCORE OF 30/30 CUM LAUDE WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH EXCELLENT KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION OF TOPICS AS WELL AS EXCELLENT CLARITY SKILLS.
