LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE COURSE HAS THE OBJECTIVE OF INTRODUCING THE MAIN CHARACTERIZATION TECHNIQUES OF MATERIALS AND IN PARTICULAR OF DEVELOP AWARENESS OF THE FUNDAMENTALS OF CHARACTERIZATION TECHNIQUES IN THE FIELD OF POLYMERIC MATERIALS
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
LABORATORY EXERCISES ALLOW YOU TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE CHARACTERIZATION TECHNIQUES AVAILABLE AND TO ADDRESS INDEPENDENTLY THE STUDY OF THE ISSUES ADDRESSED DURING THE COURSE.
MAKING JUDGMENTS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO CRITICALLY DISCUSS THE VALIDITY OF THE RESULTS OBTAINED IN DISCUSSIONS PROMOTED BY THE TEACHER IN THE LABORATORY GROUP.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE COURSE WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO ACQUIRE THE APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY IN DESCRIBING THE ANALYZES CARRIED OUT THANKS TO THE THANKS TO THE STUDY OF ARTICLES PUBLISHED IN INTERNATIONAL JOURNALS TOO.

ORGANIZATION OF THE POLYMERS IN THE SOLID STATE:
-THERMAL ANALYSIS (THERMOGRAVIMETRIC ANALYSIS (TGA), DIFFERENTIAL SCANNING CALORIMETRY ANALYSIS (DSC), DILATOMETRY, DYNAMIC-MECHANICAL ANALYSIS (DMA))
-AMORPHOUS STATE(GLASS TRANSITION (TG), PARAMETERS THAT INFLUENCE THE GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATURE, TECHNIQUES TO DETERMINE THE GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATURE)
-CRYSTALLINE STATE(MORPHOLOGY, DEGREE OF CRYSTALLINITY ,THERMODYNAMIC ASPECTS OF THE CRYSTALLIZATION OF POLYMERIC MATERIALS, CRYSTALLIZATION KINETICS, CORRELATION LENGTH OF THE CRYSTALLINE DOMAINS, SCHERRER EQUATION)
-DIFFRAZIONE OF X-RAYS (PRODUCTION AND PROPERTIES OF X-RAY, ELEMENTS OF STRUCTURAL CHEMISTRY, BRAGG'S LAW, MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES, EXAMPLES OF APPLICATION IN THE FIELD OF POLYMERS)
-SPETTROSCOPIA INFRARED (PRINCIPLES, SAMPLING TECHNIQUES, EXAMPLES IN THE POLYMERS FIELD)
- MOLECULAR ORIENTATION (RX: HERMANS’ ORIENTATION FUNCTION, BIREFRINGENCE, INFRARED DICHROISM AND TRICHROISM)
- MECHANICAL PROPERTIES (VISCOELASTICITY, STRESS-STRAIN CURVES)
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO LECTURES (16 HOURS / 2 CFU), CLASS EXERCISES AND LABORATORY EXPERIENCES (48 HOURS / 4 CFU). THE LECTURES WILL ALLOW THE STUDENT TO ACQUIRE THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN TECHNIQUES OF CHARACTERIZATION OF POLYMERIC MATERIALS. THE LABORATORY EXPERIENCES WILL ALLOW THE STUDENT TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE CHARACTERIZATION TECHNIQUES AVAILABLE AND TO INDEPENDENTLY ADDRESS THE STUDY OF THE ISSUES ANALYZED DURING THE COURSE. THE COURSE ALSO INCLUDES THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN INDIVIDUAL OR GROUP REPORT AIMED AT CRITICALLY DISCUSSING THE VALIDITY OF THE RESULTS OBTAINED.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE REPORT WILL BE DISCUSSED WITH THE CLASS AND INDIVIDUALLY WITH THE STUDENT EVEN DURING THE HOURS OF THE TEACHER'S RECEPTION IN ORDER TO MAKE THE STUDENT ACQUIRE THE APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY IN DESCRIBING THE ANALYZES CARRIED OUT.
Verification of learning
THE PURPOSE OF THE EXAMINATION IS TO VERIFY THAT THE STUDENT ACHIEVED THE EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES PROVIDED FOR BY THE COURSE
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF AN ORAL EXAM. THE STUDENT WILL HAVE TO ANSWER A SERIES OF QUESTIONS COVERING ABOUT 75% OF THE TOPICS ALSO REFERRED TO THE LABORATORY EXPERIENCES CARRIED OUT. THE TEST IS GRADED OUT OF THIRTY AND IS PASSED WITH A MINIMUM GRADE OF 18/30. THE ORAL EXAM WILL BE OF THE ORIENTATIVE DURATION OF 40 MINUTES.
