Objectives
BIOMATERIALS: CHEMICAL STRUCTURES AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES (MODULE 1)
THE MAIN KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT WILL BE:
THE COURSE AIMS TO DESCRIBE THE STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BIOMATERIALS AND THEIR PHYSICAL PROPERTIES.
N DETAIL, THE CRYSTAL STRUCTURES OF METALS, ALLOYS, CERAMIC MATERIALS AND POLYMERIC MATERIALS WILL BE DESCRIBED. THE IMPERFECTIONS PRESENT IN SOLIDS, POINT DEFECTS AND DISLOCATIONS WILL BE DESCRIBED, HIGHLIGHTING HOW THEIR PRESENCE ALTERS THE PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIALS THEMSELVES, FOR EXAMPLE INCREASING THEIR RESISTANCE .
THE MAIN TECHNIQUES OF CHARACTERIZATION OF THE MATERIALS WILL BE BRIEFLY INTRODUCED AND IN PARTICULAR THE TECHNIQUES FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE CRYSTALLINE STRUCTURES OF SOLIDS AND THE MICROSCOPIC ONES AIMED FOR EXAMPLE AT THE DETERMINATION OF GRAIN SIZES WILL BE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED.
PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO DESCRIBING HOW THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE MICROSTRUCTURE MODIFIES THE PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIALS THEMSELVES, SUCH AS THE THERMAL PROPERTIES (THERMAL CAPACITY, THERMAL EXPANSION, THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY) AND OPTICAL PROPERTIES.
THE MAIN SKILLS DEVELOPED BY THE STUDENT WILL BE:
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE ABILITY TO LEARN ABOUT THE STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS AND PROPERTIES OF DIFFERENT BIOMATERIALS.
BIOMATERIALS: MEDICAL DEVICES AND INTERACTIONS WITH BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS (MODULE 2)
THE MAIN KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT WILL BE:
THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO DESCRIBE THE MOST WIDESPREAD AND USED MATERIALS FOR BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS. IN PARTICULAR, THE CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES INVOLVED IN THE INTERACTION WITH THE BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS OF THESE MATERIALS WILL BE DESCRIBED. THE CLASSES OF MATERIALS USED IN MEDICINE (CERAMICS, METALS, POLYMERS, COMPOSITES) IN THEIR MOST WIDESPREAD APPLICATIONS WILL ALSO BE DESCRIBED.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THERAPEUTIC DEVICES (ARTICULATION AND DENTAL PROSTHESES, CARDIOVASCULAR DEVICES, CATHETERS, DEVICES FOR OPHTHALMOLOGY, NEPHROLOGY, APPLICATIONS FOR CONTROLLED DRUG RELEASE, ETC.) AND THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH IMPLANTATION (RESPONSE OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM, INFECTIONS, TECHNIQUES OF STERILIZATION) TOGETHER WITH THEIR POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS, WILL ALSO BE DESCRIBED.

THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE ABILITY TO DISCUSS AND ANALYZE PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE INTERACTION BETWEEN MATERIALS AND BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS AND AT THE SAME TIME TO RECOGNIZE THE APPLICATIVE POTENTIAL OF A MATERIAL IN THE BIOMEDICAL FIELD

STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MATERIALS AND THE RELATED PHYSICAL PROPERTIES. (0.5 CFU / 4 HOURS - FRONTAL).
CRYSTALLINE STRUCTURES OF METALS, ALLOYS, CERAMIC MATERIALS, COMPOSITE MATERIALS AND POLYMER MATERIALS. (1 CFU / 8 HOURS - FRONTAL).

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF LECTURES, EXERCISES AND LABORATORY ACTIVITIES. THE EXERCISES AND LABORATORY ACTIVITIES HAVE THE OBJECTIVE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF BIOMATERIALS. VISITS TO BIOMEDICAL APPLICATION LABORATORIES OF BIOMATERIALS ARE ALSO PLANNED.
ATTENDANCE OF CLASSROOM LESSONS IS NOT OBLIGATORY, THAT OF EXERCISES AND GUIDED TOURS ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED

Verification of learning
THE PURPOSE OF THE EXAMINATION IS TO VERIFY THAT THE STUDENT ACHIEVED THE EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES PROVIDED FOR BY THE COURSE.
THE EXAM IS STRUCTURED IN TWO ORAL TESTS; ONE AT THE END OF EACH MODULE. BOTH SINGLE ORAL TESTS WILL BE OF THE ORIENTATIVE DURATION OF 45 MINUTES. THE STUDENT WILL NEED TO ANSWER A SERIES OF QUESTIONS COVERING ABOUT 75% OF THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE RELEVANT FORM. IN DETAIL, FOR THE FIRST MODULE THE STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE BIOMATERIALS WILL BE EXAMINATION TOPICS, WHILE FOR THE SECOND MODULE THE MOST USED MATERIALS FOR BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS AND THE MOST IMPORTANT MEDICAL DEVICES FOR WHICH THEY ARE USED.
THE MINIMUM MARK FOR PASSING THE EXAM IS 18/30 AND IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS A LIMITED KNOWLEDGE FOR THE FIRST MODULE OF THE STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE MOST COMMON BIOMATERIALS, FOR THE SECOND MODULE OF THE MOST COMMON BIOMATERIALS AND MOST IMPORTANT MEDICAL DEVICES FOR WHICH THEY ARE USED. FOR BOTH MODULES THE MAXIMUM VOTE (30/30) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS A COMPLETE AND IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE, FOR THE FIRST MODULE, OF THE STRUCTURAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE MOST COMMON BIOMATERIALS AND THE MAIN CHARACTERIZATION TECHNIQUES USED FOR THEIR DETERMINATION , FOR THE SECOND MODULE, OF THE MOST COMMON BIOMATERIALS OF THE MECHANISMS OF INTERACTION WITH BIOLOGICAL TISSUES AND OF THE MOST IMPORTANT MEDICAL DEVICES THAT USE BIOMATERIALS.
THE FINAL VOTE IS GIVEN BY THE AVERAGE OF THE VOTES GIVEN IN EACH ORAL TEST.
