KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THE AIM OF THIS COURSE IS THE ACQUISITION OF THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE ON THE PHYSICS OF THE PLANET EARTH ANDON THE MAIN METHODS FOR UNDERSTANDING GEODYNAMICAL PROCESSES WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO SEISMIC AND VOLCANIC ACTIVITY APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: DEVELOP ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND AND TO ANALYZE GEODYNAMIC PROCESSES. THE COURSE IS DEVOTED TO: - KNOWLEDGE AND ANALYSIS OF THE PHYSICS PROCESSES LEADING TO GEODYNAMICS; - KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN METHODS FOR THE STUDY OF EARTH’S INTERIOR AND ITS SHAPE (INVERSE GEOPHYSICAL PROBLEM) AND FOR UNDERSTANDING AND MODEL GEODYNAMICAL PROCESSES. MAKING JUDGEMENTS: STUDENT ARE STIMULATED TO ENRICH THEIR KNOWLEDGE WITH CRITICISM AND RESPONSABILITY. THIS OBJECTIVE WILL BE REACHED THROUGH THE USE OF GEOPHYSICAL INSTRUMENTS AND THE STUDY OF SOME MANUALS, BOOKS AND OTHER MATERIAL PROVIDED AT THE COURSE. THE STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP CAPACITY OF JUDGEMENT WITH A SERIES OF CONSECUTIVE STEPS. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: THE STUDENTS ARE STIMULATED TO COMMUNICATE WITH CLEARITY THE SOLUTIONS TO THE VARIOUS PROPOSED PROBLEMS. THEY WILL BE INVITED TO JUSTIFY THEIR CHOICES. THE AIM IS TO DEVELOP ABILITY AND SYNTHESIS TO REACH A PROPER SOLUTIONS. LEARNING ABILITY: STUDENTS SHOULD ACQUIRE THE NECESSARY LEARNING SKILLS TO UNDERTAKE FURTHER STUDIES AND INSIGHTS ON THE TOPICS OF THE PHYSICAL KNOWLEDGE OF PLANET EARTH AND THE UNDERSTANDING OF GEODYNAMICAL PROCESSES. |

THE CONTENT OF THE COURSE IS BASED ON THE PRESENTATION OF THE PRESENT STATUS OF KNOWLEDGE ON THE INTERIOR OF THE PLANET EARTH, ON THE DESCRIPTION OF METHODS FOR THE STUDY OF EARTH’S INTERIOR (GEOPHYSICAL INVERSE PROBLEM) ON THE MODELS AND INTERPRETATION OF GEODYNAMICAL PROCESSES. THE MAIN CHAPTERS OF THIS COURSE ARE: - STRUCTURE OF ERTH’S INTERIOR: CRUST, MANTLE, CORE AND THEIR COMPOSITION; - THE GEOPHYSICAL INVERSE THEORY: FORMULATION OF THE INVERSE PROBLEM. PROBABILITY THEORY. THE DESCRETE LINEAR-GAUSSIAN INVERSE METHOD (NORM METHOD; GENERALIZED INVERSE AND MAXIMUM LIKELIHOOD METHOD). THE INVERSE NON-LINEAR METHOD AND THE NON GAUSSIAN DISTRIBUTIONS. THE CONTINUOUS INVERSE PROBLEM. THEORY AND APPLICATION OF GEOPHYSICAL TOMOGRAPHY. - THE SHAPE OF THE EARTH, HEAT FLUX AND THE CONVECTION. - THE LITHOSPHERE-ASTENOSPHERE SYSTEM, THE LATERAL HETEROGENEITIES AND THE GLOBAL DYNAMICS. |
