Objectives
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:

THE AIM OF THIS COURSE IS THE ACQUISITION OF THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE ON THE VOLCANO PHYSICS AND METHODS FOR THE IDENTIFICATION OF MAGMA RESERVOIRS, ERUPTIVE PROCESSES AND METHODS FOR VOLCANO MONITORING AND ESTIMATE OF VOLCANIC HAZARDS.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:

DEVELOP ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND AND TO ANALYZE VOLCANIC PROCESSES. THE COURSE IS DEVOTED TO:
- KNOWLEDGE AND ANALYSIS OF THE PHYSICS PROCESSES LEADING TO VOLCANOES;
- KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN METHODS FOR THE STUDY OF VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS AND TO UNDERSTAND THE PHYSICS OF VOLCANO FORECASTING.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS:

STUDENT ARE STIMULATED TO ENRICH THEIR KNOWLEDGE WITH CRITICISM AND RESPONSABILITY. THIS OBJECTIVE WILL BE REACHED THROUGH THE USE OF GEOPHYSICAL INSTRUMENTS AND THE STUDY OF SOME MANUALS, BOOKS AND OTHER MATERIAL PROVIDED AT THE COURSE. THE STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP CAPACITY OF JUDGEMENT WITH A SERIES OF CONSECUTIVE STEPS.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

THE STUDENTS ARE STIMULATED TO COMMUNICATE WITH CLEARITY THE SOLUTIONS TO THE VARIOUS PROPOSED PROBLEMS. THEY WILL BE INVITED TO JUSTIFY THEIR CHOICES. THE AIM IS TO DEVELOP ABILITY AND SYNTHESIS TO REACH A PROPER SOLUTIONS.

LEARNING ABILITY:

STUDENTS SHOULD ACQUIRE THE NECESSARY LEARNING SKILLS TO UNDERTAKE FURTHER STUDIES AND INSIGHTS ON THE TOPICS OF THE PHYSICAL KNOWLEDGE OF VOLCANISM AND THE UNDERSTANDING OF ERUPTIVE MECHANISMS.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE IN MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS, EARTH PHYSICS AND GEOPHYSICS/PHYSICS LABORATORY
Contents
THE COURSE CONTENT IS DIVIDED ON THE PRESENTATION OF THE MAIN ISSUES OF THE PHISICS OF THE VOLCANISM SUCH AS THE VOLCANIC PHENOMENA MODELING AND THEIR APPLICATIONS IN ORDER TO REDUCE VOLCANIC RISK. THE MAIN MODULES OF THIS COURSE ARE:

• ELEMENTS OF PHYSICAL VOLCANOLOGY. THIS MODULE INCLUDES THE DESCRIPTION OF THE MAIN ASPECTS CONCERNING THE PHYSICS AND PHENOMENOLOGY OF VOLCANIC SYSTEMS AND THEIR GENESIS.
• STRUCTURE OF THE VOLCANOES AND IDENTIFICATION OF MAGMA CHAMBERS. THIS MODULE INCLUDES DISCUSSION OF THE MAINMETHODS FOR IDENTIFICATION OF SHALLOW AND DEEP
STRUCTURE OF VOLCANOES AND THEIR FEEDING SYSTEMS, WITH PARTICOLAR REFERENCE TO GEOPHYSICAL TOMOGRAPHY.
• MONITORING OF VOLCANOES. THIS MODULE ADDRESSES THE PROBLEM OF IDENTIFICATION OF ERUPTION PRECURSORY PHENOMENA AND THE PROBLEM OF EARLY WARNING.
• MODELS OF EXPLOSIVE VOLCANOES. THIS CHAPTER FOCUSES ON ISSUES RELATED TO THE TRANSPORT OF MAGMA AND ERUPTIVE MECHANISMS, AS WELL AS METHODS TO SIMULATE THESE PHENOMENA.
• THE VOLCANIC RISK. THIS MODULE IS LINKED TO ISSUES OF STATISTICAL AND PREDICTIVE ESTIMATION AND EVALUATION OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF VOLCANIC HAZARD AND THE METHODOLOGIES USED FOR VOLCANIC RISK MINIMIZATION.
Teaching Methods
LECTURES AND EXERCISES ON THE STRUCTURE OF VOLCANOES AND THEIR DYNAMICS.
Verification of learning
THE EXAMINATION IS PERFORMED THROUGH AN ANALYSIS OF A CASE HISTORY, WITH A WRITTEN AND ORAL DISSERTATION.
THE FINAL SCORE WILL BE BASED ON THE AVERAGE SCORE OF THE WRITTEN AND ORAL DISCUSSION OTHER THAN THE REPORT.
