Objectives
THE LECTURES INTEND TO PROVIDE A KNOWLEDGE OF SOME EXPERIMENTAL METHODS AND TECHNIQUES IN MATERIAL SCIENCE.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE LECTURES AIM TO PROVIDE AN OVERVIEW ON SOME PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE EXPERIMENTAL REALIZATION OF THIN FILMS AND THE MEASURE OF THEIR ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE LECTURES HAVE THE OBJECTIVE TO MAKE THE STUDENT ABLE TO ASSIMILATE THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND TO BE ABLE TO OPERATE IN A THIN FILM LABORATORY.
Prerequisites
THE KNOWLEDGE OF ELEMENTS OF SOLID STATE PHYSICS IS REQUIRED.

THIN FILM DEPOSITION TECHNIQUES. VACUUM DEPOSITION TECHNIQUES. VACUUM TECHNOLOGIES. SPUTTERING DEPOSITION. THIN FILMS NUCLEATION AND GROWTH MECHANISMS. CRYOGENIC TECHNIQUES FOR LOW AND ULTRA-LOW TEMPERATURES. LOW TEMPERATURE THERMOMETRY. TRANSPORT MEASUREMENTS PERFORED ON THIN FILMS. THE VAN DER PAUWE METHOD.
DESIGN AND REALIZATION OF AN ADVANCED EXPERIMENT FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF THE ELECTRICAL TRANSPORT PROPERTIES OF THIN FILMS OF METALLIC MATERIALS. RRSISTIVITÀ DEPENDING ON TEMPERATURE AND THICKNESS DEPENDENCE OF THE ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY. ESTIMATION OF THE DEBYE TEMPERATURE.
Teaching Methods
THE LECTURES WILL HAVE A DESCRIPTIVE CHARACTER, AIMED TO TEACH SOME BASIC CONCEPTS USEFUL TO THE REALIZATION OF THIN FILMS AND TO THE MEASUREMENT OF ELECTRICAL TRANSPORT PROPERTIES EVEN AT LOW-TEMPERATURES. FOR THIS PART ABOUT 30 HOURS ARE LANNED. THE REMAINING PART OF THE LECTURES WILL BE DEDICATED TO THE LAB ACTIVITY THAT WILL BE BASED ON THE FABRICATION OF THIN FILMS OF A METALIC MATERIAL ( ONE AMONG NB, CU , PD , PDNI , AL , CUMN , CUNI , CUMN , ETC ,) OF DIFFERENT THICKNESSES FOR THE MEASURE OF THE BEHAVIOR OF RESISTIVITY AS A FUNCTION OF THE THICKNESS AND TEMPERATURE.
Verification of learning
THE VERIFICATION AND THE EVALUATION OF THE LEVEL OF LEARNING OF THE STUDENT WILL TAKE PLACE THROUGH A FINAL EXAM CONSISTS IN THE DISCUSSION OF THE TOPICS COVERED BY THE TAECHER DURING THE LECTURES. IT WILL BE ALSO CRITICALLY DISCUSSED A FINAL REPORT BASED ON THE DESCRIPTION OF THE EXPERIMENT PERFORMED BY THE STUDENTS IN THE LABORATORY.
