Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE BASIS OF THE ANALYTICAL METHODOLOGIES BASED ON NUCLEAR TECHNIQUES IN DIFFERENT FIELDS OF APPLICATION SUCH AS THE CULTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL HERITAGE DIAGNOSTICS AND MATERIAL ANALYSIS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
STUDENTS WILL ACHIEVE A GOOD GENERAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE PHYSICAL LAWS AT THE BASIS OF SEVERAL APPLICATIONS IN VARIOUS FIELDS AND WILL LEARN HOW TO MASTER THE RUNNING RATIONALES, THE APPLICATION LIMITS, THE ACHIEVABLE PRECISION AND THE INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE CAPACITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED WILL BE FOSTERED THROUGH THE EXECUTION OF PRACTICAL EXERCISES DURING WHICH THE STUDENTS WILL PERFORM IN THE LABORATORY APPLICATIVE EXPERIMENTS AND WILL INTERPRET THE RESULTS IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE APPLICATION.
Prerequisites
A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF CLASSICAL PHYSICS IS REQUIRED, AS WELL AS A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF NUCLEAR PHYSICS AND OF DATA HANDLING AND ANALYSIS METHODS.

1. GENERAL FEATURES OF ANALYTICAL METHIODOLOGIES.SENSITIVITY LIMITS, ACCURACY AND PRECISION. DESTRUCTIVITY AND INVASIVITY. DETECTION METHODS.

2. RADIOACTIVITY. PRODUCTION AND ACCELERATION OF ION BEANS. NEUTRON GENERATORS. NUCLEAR REACTIONS. ACTIVATION. QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE RADIONUCLIDE ANALYSIS.

3. RADIATION-MATTER INTERACTIONS. IBA TECHNIQUES. ELECTRONIC AND NUCLEAR PROCESSES. ELASTIC AND INELASTIC SCATTERING. RUTHERFORD BACKSCATTERING IN NORMAL AND INVERSE KINEMATICS. NUCLEAR REACTION ANALYSIS. PARTICLE INDUCED X AND RAY EMISSION. X-RAY FLUORESCENCE.

4. APPLICATIONS TO MATERIAL ANALYSIS. DETECTION 0F TRACE ELEMENTS. DEPTH PROFILES.

5. APPLICATIONS TO THE CULTURAL HERITAGE DIAGNOSTICS. MICRO-PIXE. DATING OF FINDS, THE 14C METHOD. RADIOMETRIC ANALYSES WITH ACCELERATOR MASS SPECTROMETRY. SAMPLE TREATMENT. CALIBRATION. TERMOLUMINESCENCE DATING.
