Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF MOLECULAR QUANTUM MECHANICS THAT IS USEFUL TO UNDERSTAND THE FORMATION MECHANISMS, THE STRUCTURE AND THE SYMMETRY PROPERTIES OF A SIMPLE MOLECULE, AS WELL AS THE LINK WITH INFRARED ABSORPTION (OR EMISSION) SPECTRA.

KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED AND ITS COMPREHENSION:
STUDENTS WILL ACHIEVE A GOOD GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF MOLECULAR PHYSICS AND MOLECULAR SPECTROSCOPY. MOREOVER, THEY WILL UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF LASER SPECTROSCOPY FOR THE DETERMINATION OF MOLECULAR PARAMETERS AND FOR THE DIAGNOSTIC OF GASEOUS ENVIRONMENTS.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
STUDENTS WILL UNDERSTAND THE RELEVANCE OF QUANTUM PHYSICS AND MOLECULAR SPECTROSCOPY FOR THE STUDY OF EARTH AND PLANETARY ATMOSPHERES. THE CAPACITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE WILL BE STIMULATED THROUGH A NUMBER OF EXAMPLES OF REAL SPECTROSCOPIC APPLICATIONS WITH A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT PURPOSES.
Prerequisites
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF CLASSICAL PHYSICS (MECHANICS AND THERMODYNAMICS) AND GOOD PRACTICE WITH ANALYSIS AND CALCULUS TOOLS ARE REQUIRED, AS WELL AS A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF QUANTUM MECHANICS AND ATOMIC PHYSICS. BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF DETECTION SYSTEMS FOR ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION.

3. MODERN SPECTROSCOPIC METHODS
SPECTROSCOPIC METHODS. FOURIER TRANSFORM INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY. HIGH-RESOLUTION AND HIGH-SENSITIVITY LASER SPECTROSCOPY. COMB CALIBRATED MOLECULAR SPECTROSCOPY. APPLICATIONS TO FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICS, ENVIRONMENTAL PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY.
