Objectives
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE COURSE PROVIDES A WIDE AND DEEP PICTURE OF THE EXPERIMENTAL EVIDENCE THAT LED TO THE STANDARD MODEL OF FUNDAMENTAL INTERACTIONS AND ON THE OPEN ISSUES OF RESEARCH.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO WORK OUT EXERCISES OR EXAMPLES UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF THE TEACHER. THEY ARE ALSO STIMULATED TO GO THROUGH THE PROCESS OF CONCEPT DESIGN FOR HIGH-ENERGY EXPERIMENTS.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
STUDENTS ARE STIMULATED TO EXPLAIN CLEARLY AND RIGOROUSLY THE KNOWLEDGE THEY ACQUIRE. AT THE END OF THE COURSE THEY ARE REQUIRED TO CORRECTLY STATE THE SUBJECTS AND PROBLEMS OF THE COURSE, WHILE MASTERING THE FORMALISM USED IN SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION ABOUT FUNDAMENTAL INTERACTIONS.
MAKING JUDGEMENTS:
STUDENTS ARE LED TO LEARN WITH A CRITICAL APPROACH ALL THE SUBJECTS EXPLAINED BY THE TEACHER. EACH EXPERIMENTAL RESULT IS ANALYZED FROM PRACTICAL AND TECHNICAL POINTS OF VIEW, FOCUSING BOTH ON THE INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS AND ON THEIR CONNECTION TO THE THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK. THE SUBJECTS ARE SHOWN IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER, SO THAT STUDENTS CAN DISCUSS THEM IN THE HISTORICAL AND LOGICAL CONTEXT OF EVOLVING KNOWLEDGE. THE CRITICAL CAPABILITIES ARE EXPECTED TO GROW, EVENTUALLY HELPING BOTH IN A FUTURE RESEARCH ACTIVITY AND IN PRACTICAL APPLICATION.
CONTINUING EDUCATION:
AT THE END OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENTS MUST HAVE A CONSISTENT PICTURE OF THE STANDARD MODEL OF PARTICLE INTERACTION, SO THAT THEY CAN AUTONOMOUSLY UNDERSTAND A TYPICAL PAPER OF A PEER-REVIEWED JOURNAL CONCERNING THE PHYSICS OF FUNDAMENTAL INTERACTIONS.

QUANTUM MECHANICS, COMPOSITION OF ANGULAR MOMENTA, CONTINUOUS SYMMETRIES. CLASSICAL ELECTROMAGNETISM AND SPECIAL RELATIVITY. RELATIVISTIC WAVE EQUATIONS OF MAXWELL, KLEIN-GORDON AND DIRAC. LAGRANGIAN FORMALISM AND PERTURBATIVE EXPANSION (FEYNMAN DIAGRAMS). COLLISION THEORY AND PARTIAL WAVE DECOMPOSITION. KNOWLEDGE OF FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS OF ATOMIC AND NUCLEAR PHYSICS. RADIOACTIVE DECAYS. NUCLEAR MODELS. PARTICLE CLASSIFICATION.

STRONG INTERACTIONS. STATIC QUARK MODEL. QUARKONIUM, CHARMONIUM, BOTTOMONIO. EXPERIMENTS ON DEEP INELASTIC SCATTERING AND PARTICLE MODELING AND CONNECTION WITH THE QUARK MODEL. QCD AND THE PROBLEM OF CONFINEMENT. COMPARISON OF EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS OF PARTITION DISTRIBUTION FUNCTIONS WITH EVOLUTION EQUATIONS. PHYSICS OF ULTRARELATIVISTIC HEAVY IONS. ADONIC JETS. EXPERIMENTAL EVIDENCE OF DECONFINEMENT AND QUARK-GLUON-PLASMA.
Teaching Methods
TEACHING CONSISTS OF 32 HOURS OF FRONTAL LESSONS AND 16 HOURS OF EXERCISES. LESSONS AND EXERCISES WILL ALSO BE PROVIDED ON THE TOPICS OUTLINED WITH THE AID OF AUDIOVISUAL MATERIAL. EXERCISES WILL INCLUDE THE DIRECT PARTICIPATION OF STUDENTS WHO WILL BE INVITED TO ATTEND AND DISCUSS THE EXERCISES PROPOSED BY THE TEACHER IN THE CLASSROOM TOGETHER WITH THE REST OF THE CLASS.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES AND THE VERIFICATION OF THE ABILITY TO APPLY AND DEVELOP IN A CRITICAL AND AUTONOMOUS WAY THE EXPOSED ARGUMENTS WILL BE CERTIFIED BY A FINAL ORAL EXAM WITH GRADES ON A SCALE OF 30 AND FROM THE DISCUSSION OF A CANDIDATE'S WORK ON A SPECIFIC TOPIC PROPOSED BY THE TEACHER.
