Objectives
THE STATISTICAL SEISMOLOGY COURSE OFFERS A NEW APPROACH TO THE TOPIC, BASED ON STATISTICAL MECHANICS.

KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION:
THE COURSE WILL PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE FUNDAMENTAL EMPIRICAL LAWS ON THE STATISTICAL BEHAVIOUR OF EARTHQUAKE OCCURRENCE. MOREOVER IT WILL PROVIDE ELEMENTS ABOUT SOME MODELS FOR EARTHQUAKE OCCURRENCE ABLE TO REPRODUCE THE STATISTICAL BEHAVIOUR OF SEISMIC CATALOGUES. THE STUDIED MODELS WILL BE THE ANALOGIC TYPE ONES (BURRIDGE AND KNOPOFF, SELF-ORGANIZED CRITICALITY) OR POINT PROCESS TYPE (SELF-EXCITING MODELS, EPIDEMIC TYPE AFTERSHOCK SEQUENCES) AND OTHERS BASED ON FRICTION ON SEISMIC FAULTS (STATE RATE FRICTION LAWS). FINALLY THE COURSE WILL PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH LINES ON EARTHQUAKE PREDICTION.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION:
AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO EVALUATE THE OCCURRENCE PROBABILITY OF AN EARTHQUAKE ON THE BASIS OF THE MOST USED STATISTICAL MODELS OF EARTHQUAKE OCCURRENCE. MOREOVER HE WILL BE ABLE TO VERIFY IF A THEORETICAL MODEL CAN REPRODUCE THE EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS.
Prerequisites
STUDENTS SHOULD KNOW THE FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS OF THE GENERAL PHYSICS AND THE FUNDAMENTAL TECHNIQUES FOR THE INTEGRATION OF SECOND ORDER ORDINARY DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS. MOREOVER THEY SHOLD KNOW THE FUNDAMENTALS OF STATISTICS. AS AN EXAMPLE, IS REQUIRED THE KNOLEDGE OF WHAT IS A DISTRIBUTION AND OF THE PROPERTIES OF A PROBABILITY DENSITY FUNCTION.

ORAL EXAMINATION. IN PARTICULAR IT WILL CONSIST IN A CONVERSATION DURING WHICH THE STUDENT WILL SHOW HOW MUCH HE HAVE LEARNED THE CONTENTS OF THE COURSE.
