Objectives
THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO EXTEND THE KNOWLEDGE OF STATISTICAL MECHANICS TO THE STUDY OF CRITICAL PHENOMENA IN COMPLEX SYSTEMS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE COURSE IS EXPECTED TO LEAD TO A FULL COMPREHENSION OF IMPORTANT CONCEPTS SUCH AS THE EMERGENCE OF COLLECTIVE PHENOMENA AND CRITICAL BEHAVIOR IN BIOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL SYSTEMS, THE PHENOMENOLOGY OF FIRST AND SECOND ORDER PHASE TRANSITIONS, THE CLASS OF UNIVERSALITY IN STATIC AND DYNAMIC TRANSITIONS.
AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO HAVE ACQUIRED THE TOOLS NEEDED TO DEEPLY UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPTS AND THE TECHNIQUES OF PHYSICS OF COMPLEX SYSTEMS, SUCH AS EMERGING OF COLLECTIVE PHENOMENA, CRITICALITY, SCALE INVARIANCE, FRACTALS AND SELF-ORGANIZATION.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO A LARGE VARIETY OF COMPLEX SYSTEMS AVAILABLE IN NATURE (AMONG WHICH THE COMPLEX SYSTEMS FOR EXCELLENCE, SUCH AS BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS).
THANKS TO THE VARIETY OF THE EXAMPLES STUDIED, FROM HOPFIELD MODEL TO DIRECTED PERCOLATION, FROM EARTHQUAKES TO NEURAL AVALANCHES, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED TECHNIQUES TO NOVEL MULTIDISCIPLINARY CASES.
Prerequisites
THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN THE STATISTICAL MECHANICS COURSE MAY BE USEFUL.
THE KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH IS USEFUL TO UNDERSTAND THE TEXTBOOK.

Teaching Methods
THEORETICAL LESSONS AND EXERCISES.
LECTURES ARE AIMED AT PRESENTING THE THEORY AND INTERDISCIPLINARY APPLICATIONS, INTRODUCING NEW EXAMPLES. THE EXERCISES ASSIGNED TO STUDENTS ARE LEDBY THE TEACHER IN CLASS USING THE TECHNIQUES PRESENTED IN THEORY LECTURES, IN ODER TO DEVELOP THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO IDENTIFY THE MOST APPROPRIATE SOLUTION TECHNIQUES AND PRESENT THE RESULTS IN A CLEAR AND EFFICIENT WAY.
ONE OF THE EXERCITATION WILL BE DEDICATED TO THE CODE OF A SOC MODEL WITH THE COMPUTER.
Verification of learning
THE ASSESSMENT OF THE ACHIEVEMENT OF LEARNING OBJECTIVES IS CARRIED OUT BY AN ORAL EXAM.
THE ORAL EXAMINATION IS AIMED AT VERIFYING THE LEVEL OF THE THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS GAINED BY THE STUDENT
THE score IS IN 30.
THE MINIMUM score (18/30) IS GIVEN WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS DOUBTS IN THE DESCRIPTION OF THE MAIN PHENOMENA AND MODELS (CRITICAL PHENOMENA, SMALL WORLD NETWORKS, SCALE FREE NETWORKS, SOC, HOPFIELD) AND SHOWS A BAD LANGUAGE PROPERTY.
THE MAXIMUM (30/30) IS given WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS A DEEP KNOWLEDGE OF THE MECHANISMS OF EMERGING OF CRITICAL AND COLLECTIVE PHENOMENA IN COMPLEX PHYSICAL AND BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS AND HE/she IS ABLE TO DO LINKS BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT MODELS PROPERTIES.
THE LAUDE IS GIVEN WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS A DEEP LANGUAGE PROPERTY AND CAPACITY TO MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN VARIOUS PARTIES OF THE PROGRAM, APPLYING THE CONCEPTS AND TECHNIQUES ACQUIRED IN INTERDISCIPLINARY CONTEXTS, ALSO DIFFERENT FROM THOSE PROPOSED BY THE TEACHER
