THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE BOTH THEORETICAL AND APPLIED KNOWLEDGE ON THE SIZING AND USING MACHINES AND ELECTRICAL MOTOR DRIVES. THE COURSE PROVIDES THE BASIC CRITERIA FOR SIZING ELECTRONIC POWER CONVERTERS FOR INDUSTRIAL, TRACTION AND POWER APPLICATIONS. |

AFTER AN INTRODUCTION TO THE ELECTRIC MOTOR DRIVES AND THE APPLICATIONS, THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: - DEFINITION OF THE ELECTRIC MOTOR DRIVE. APPLICATION OF ELECTRIC MOTOR DRIVES IN THE INDUSTRIAL WORLD (2 H). - POWER ELECTRONICS FOR ELECTRIC MOTOR DRIVES. AC/DC CONVERTERS: SINGLE-PHASE RECTIFIERS CONTROLLED AND UNCONTROLLED HALF-WAVE AND CONTROLLED AND UNCONTROLLED DOUBLE-PHASE RECTIFIERS AND THREE-PHASE RECTIFIERS (15 H). - DC/DC CONVERTERS: BUCK CONVERTER, BOOST CONVERTER, BUCK BOOST CONVERTER, HALF BRIDGE AND FULL BRIDGE DC/DC CONVERTER (15 H). - DC/AC CONVERTERS: PWM INVERTER, SQUARE WAVE (3 H). - ROTATING ELECTRIC MACHINES: OPERATING PRINCIPLES, MAGNETIC CIRCUITS AND ENERGY OF THE MAGNETIC FIELDS (4 H) - DC CURRENT MACHINE (6 H). ROTATING MAGNETIC FIELD (3 H). - ASYNCHRONOUS MOTOR DRIVE (6 H) - POWER PLANTS (6 H): CABLES AND CONDUCTORS, OVERCURRENT PROTECTION APPARATUS, SAFETY IN POWER PLANT: EARTHING SYSTEM AND DIFFERENTIAL RELAY. |

THE COURSE CONSISTS OF 60 HOURS OF LECTURES AND LABORATORY WORK. IN PARTICULAR, 48 HOURS OF CLASSROOM LESSONS AND EXERCISES AND 12 HOURS OF GUIDED LABORATORY EXERCISES ARE PROVIDED. THE COURSE IS ORGANIZED AS FOLLOWS: CLASSROOM LESSONS ON ALL COURSE SUBJECTS AND RELATED NUMERICAL EXERCISES. IN THE LAB, STUDENTS WILL BE DIVIDED INTO GROUPS (UP TO 5 STUDENTS PER GROUP) AND WILL WORK ON AC/DC AND DC/DC CONVERTERS. |

THE EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL INTERVIEW EVALUATED IN THIRTY-FIVE. THE ORAL EXAMINATION INCLUDES THE PRESENTATION OF A TECHNICAL REPORT PRODUCED BY THE STUDENT EITHER AUTONOMOUSLY OR IN A GROUP ON THE TOPIC OF THE EXERCISES CARRIED OUT IN THE LABORATORY. THE ELABORATE IS A NECESSARY CONDITION FOR THE ORAL EXAMINATION AND WEIGHS ABOUT 33% ON THE FINAL GRADE. THE ORAL TEST CONSISTS OF A DISCUSSION OF APPROXIMATELY 40 MINUTES AIMED AT ASSESSING THE STUDENT'S LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONTENTS OF THE PROGRAM. |
