Objectives
THE COURSE PROVIDES THE THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL ISSUES OF THE LIGHT PROPAGATION IN THE OPTICAL FIBERS USED IN TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, IN SENSOR AND INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS, AS WELL.
THE COURSE CONTAINS A SIGNIFICANT PART WITH LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS.


KNOWLEDGE OF OPTICAL FIBERS, OPTICAL FIBER SENSORS AND OF THE APPLICATIONS IN TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND IN INDUSTRIAL AND CIVIL FIELD.

CAPABILITY OF WORKING IN A LABORATORY, RECOGNIZING OPTICAL INSTRUMENTATION AND EQUIPPING THE INSTRUMENTAL SET-UP FOR FIBER OPTICS MEASUREMENTS

CAPABILITY OF WORKING BOTH ALONE AND IN A TEAM, WRITING CLEAR AND ORGANIZED TECHNICAL REPORTS, READING TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE AND COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY.

Prerequisites
THE COURSE REQUIRES THE KNOWLEDGE OF FOLLOWING TOPICS: GENERAL THEOREMS OF THE ELECTROMAGNETISMS, WAVE PROPAGATION IN FREE SPACE, WAVE PROPAGATION IN WAVEGUIDES.

STRUCTURE OF AN OPTICAL FIBER; STEP-INDEX FIBER; GRADED-INDEX FIBER; SINGLE-MODE FIBER; MULTI-MODE FIBER; MATERIALS; TECHNOLOGY; PLASTIC FIBERS; TRANSMISSION PARAMETERS; FIBER MEASUREMENTS; OPTICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS (10 HOURS).

GEOMETRICAL OPTICS:
OPTICAL RAYS; LENSES AND OPTICAL SYSTEMS; RAYS IN STEP-INDEX FIBERS; RAYS IN GRADED-INDEX FIBERS (10 HOURS).

FIBER OPTICS SENSORS
INTRINSIC AND EXTRINSIC SENSORS; TEMPERATURE SENSORS; DEFORMATION SENSORS; LIQUID LEVEL SENSORS; BRAGG SENSORS (10 HOURS).

LABORATORY:
FIBER CUTTING; CHARACTERIZATION OF LASER-FIBER COUPLING; NUMERICAL APERTURE MEASUREMENTS; ATTENUATION MEASUREMENTS; CONNECTOR CHARACTERIZATION; CHARACTERIZATION OF FIBER-FIBER COUPLING; CHARACTERIZATION OF A FIBER BRAGG SENSOR (30 HOURS).
Teaching Methods
TEACHING METHOD DURING CLASSES ARE LECTURES FOR 4CFU (40 HOURS), WITH THE HELP OF CLASSWORKS, LABORATORY EXPERIENCES (IN TEAM) FOR 2CFU (20 HOURS). IT IS MANDATORY TO ATTEND THE WHOLE 20 HOURS LABORATORY. STUDENT WHO CANNOT PARTICIPATE TO ONE LABORATORY CLASS, IF ADEQUATELY ARGUMENTED, CAN CATCH UP IN NON-SCHEDULED TIME.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM ASSESSES THE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONCEPTS PRESENTED IN CLASSROOM, THE ABILITY TO APPLY THIS KNOWLEDGE TO THE ANALYSIS OF FIBER OPTIC NETWORKS, THE AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT, COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND THE ELOQUENCE.
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF A PRACTICAL TEST THAT INVOLVES THE DRAFTING OF A PAPER AND AN ORAL PART (OPTIONAL).
THE PRACTICAL TEST INVOLVES THE EVALUATION OF TECHNICAL REPORTS OF THE LABORATORY EXPERIENCES CARRIED OUT DURING CLASSES AND A FINAL TEST POSSIBLY SUBMITTED THROUGH THE E-LEARNING PLATFORM MADE AVAILABLE BY THE UNIVERSITY. WILL BE EVALUATED: THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, THE AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS.
THE ORAL EXAM IS OPTIONAL AND FOCUSES ON THE CONTENTS OF THE TECHNICAL REPORTS AND THE ENTIRE PROGRAM. THE STUDENT WILL ALSO BE ASKED TO ARGUE THE CHOICES MADE IN THE LABORATORY EXPERIENCE. THE EVALUATION OF THE ORAL EXAM WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE KNOWLEDGE DEMONSTRATED BY THE STUDENT, THE ABILITY TO LEARN AND TO APPLY WHAT HAS BEEN THAUGHT, THE QUALITY OF THE PRESENTATION AND THE QUALITY OF THE PAPER DISCUSSED.
