Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS AT PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH THE BASIC METHODOLOGIES FOR DESIGN AND VERIFICATION OF REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES AT BOTH SERVICEABILITY AND ULTIMATE LIMIT STATES.
TO THIS PURPOSE, LESSONS WILL BE PRELIMINARY GIVEN TO STUDENTS ON: CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS, ACTIONS ON STRUCTURES, “SEMI-PROBABILISTIC METHOD AT LIMIT STATES”.
AT THE SAME TIME, METHODS FOR THE “STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS” UNDER GRAVITY LOADS, WITH REFERENCE TO STATICALLY DETERMINATE AND INDETERMINATE AND TO BEAM SYSTEMS (FRAMES AND TRUSS STRUCTURES) WILL BE DISCUSSED.
FURTHERMORE, BASIC KNOWLEDGES FOR THE ANALYSIS OF RIGID FOUNDATIONS ON ELASTIC SOIL AND ELASTIC FOUNDATIONS ON ELASTIC SOIL WILL BE PROVIDED.
EXPECTED LEARNING SKILLS:
- KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS: STUDENTS WILL HAVE TO ACQUIRE THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE DESIGN OF RC STRUCTURES IN C.A. AND PROVE TO HAVE ATTAINED AN ADEQUATE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE THEORETICAL AND ANALYTICAL "TOOLS" SHOWN DURING THE LESSONS.
- ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: TO VERIFY THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE OBTAINED AND THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE TOPICS DEVELOPED DURING THE COURSE, THE STUDENTS WILL BE OFFERED TWO "DESIGN EXERCISES", AND IN PARTICULAR: A FIRST PROJECT CONCERNING A RC SLAB; A SECOND PROJECT CONCERNING A RC 2D-FRAME. BOTH PROJECTS WILL HAVE TO BE CARRIED OUT USING THE CURRENT ITALIAN BUILDING CODE (NTC 2018).
- AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT: THE STUDENT WILL HAVE TO DEMONSTRATE THAT HE HAS ACHIEVED THE ABILITY OF UNDERSTANDING THE MOST APPROPRIATE THEORIES AND METHODS (IN TERMS OF ACCURACY AND RELIABILITY) FOR DESIGNING, ANALYZING AND PREDICTING THE BEHAVIOR OF RC STRUCTURES (BEAMS AND FRAMES).
- COMMUNICATION SKILLS: THE STUDENT WILL HAVE TO ACQUIRE THE CAPABILITY OF WORKING IN GROUPS AND TO ORALLY PRESENT, SATISFACTORILY, THE TOPICS OF STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING LEARNED DURING THE COURSE.

PREREQUISITES: STRUCTURAL MECHANICS 1

IN ORDER TO SUCCESSFULLY ACHIEVE THE REQUIRED OBJECTIVES, A GOOD BACKGROUND OF CONCEPTS LEARNED IN THE COURSE OF "STRUCTURAL MECHANICS" IS NEEDED.

- ULS FOR NORMAL STRESSES (BENDING AND COMBINED COMPRESSIVE AND BENDING STRESSES – 12 HR);
- ULS FOR SHEAR STRESSES (SHEAR AND TORSION -10HR);
7. ANALYSIS METHODS FOR 2D FRAMES (10HR);
8. RIGID AND ELASTIC FOUNDATION BEAMS ON ELASTIC SOIL;
9. EXERCISE PROJECTS (22HR):
- DESIGN OF A REINFORCED CONCRETE SLAB
- DESIGN OF A RC FRAMED BUILDING UNDER GRAVITY LOADS
Teaching Methods
THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, THEORETICAL LESSONS (ABOUT 7 CFU) AND EXERCISES (ABOUT 2 CFU) WILL BE HELD IN THE CLASSROOM DURING THE SCHEDULED TIME FOR THE COURSE.
ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY; EVEN THOUGH THE REGULATIONS OF THE DEGREE PROGRAM ALLOW THE POSSIBILITY OF BEING ABSENT FOR A LIMITED NUMBER OF HOURS (30%), THE REGULAR ATTENDANCE AT THE COURSE IS ENCOURAGED.
THE EXERCISES MAINLY CONSIST IN DEVELOPING TWO PROJECTS: THE FIRST DEALS WITH A RC SLAB; THE SECOND FOCUSES ON A FRAMED RC BUILDING TO BE DESIGNED UNDER GRAVITY LOADS
BOTH PROJECTS WILL BE DISCUSSED DURING THE EXAM AND WILL HAVE TO BE ACCOMPANIED BY GRAPHIC DRAWINGS.
Verification of learning
THE ASSESSMENT OF THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES WILL BE DONE THROUGH AN ORAL EXAMINATION THAT EACH STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO KEEP STARTING FROM THE END OF THE COURSE.
THE GRADE WILL DEPEND ON THE MATURITY GAINED ON THE COURSE CONTENT, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE QUALITY OF THE ORAL DISCUSSION, THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE POSTULATES AND BASIC LOGIC OF THE DISCIPLINE, THE CAPABILITY OF SOLVING THE MAIN APPLICATION ISSUES AND ACCURACY DEGREE OF THE TWO PROJECTS DEVELOPED DURING THE COURSE.
THE GRADE CUM LAUDE WILL REWARD STUDENTS WHO WILL HAVE FULLY SATISFIED ALL THE ABOVE REQUIREMENTS.
