Objectives
THE COURSE PURPORTS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE BASICS OF AERODYNAMICS, TO EXPLAIN THE MECHANISMS BEHIND THE GENERATION OF AERODYNAMIC FORCES ON ROAD VEHICLES, AND TO DESCRIBE THE METHODOLOGIES FOR THEIR EVALUATION. AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENTS WILL POSSESS THE KNOWLEDGE NECESSARY TO EVALUATE THE AERODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE OF VEHICLES OF DIFFERENT TYPES AND GIVE USEFUL GUIDANCE TO THEIR DESIGN.

DURING THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE THE FOLLOWING SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: KNOWLEDGE OF AERODYNAMICS FUNDAMENTALS AND UNDERSTANDING OF AERODYNAMIC FORCE GENERATION ON BOTH STREAMLINED AND BLUFF BODIES.

• APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
EVALUATE THE AERODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE OF VEHICLES OF DIFFERENT TYPES AND GIVE USEFUL GUIDANCE TO THEIR DESIGN.

• MAKING JUDGMENTS: KNOW HOW TO SELECT THE MOST APPROPRIATE METHODS FOR EVALUATING, PREDICTING AND MEASURING AERODYNAMIC FORCES.

• COMMUNICATION SKILLS: KNOW HOW TO WORK IN A GROUP AND EXPOSE TOPICS RELATED TO THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE.

• KNOW HOW TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO CONTEXTS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE AND PERFORM A MORE INDEPTH STUDY OF THE COURSE TOPICS USING MATERIALS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED.
Prerequisites
FOR THE SUCCESSFUL ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE STUDENT HAS ACQUIRED THE KNOWLEDGE OF FLUID MECHANICS AS TAUGHT IN THE THREE-YEAR DEGREE COURSE, THE COMMONEST NUMERICAL METHODS USED IN FLUID DYNAMICS AND, MORE GENERALLY, THE PHYSICO-MATHEMATICAL BASES COMMON TO A MASTER DEGREE IN ENGINEERING.

• EXERCISES AND PREPARATION TO THE FINAL EXAM (4H).
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF A TOTAL OF 60 TEACHING HOURS (6 CFU) DIVIDED AS FOLLOWS: 36 HOURS OF LECTURES AND 24 HOURS OF PRACTICE. DURING THE CLASSES, PRACTICAL PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE WILL BE DISCUSSED AND SOLVED. TOPICS WILL BE ADDRESSED WITH THE HELP OF MOVIE PROJECTIONS AND WITH THE ACTIVE PARTICIPATION OF STUDENTS.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED THROUGH AN ORAL EXAM TENDING TO ASSESS THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE GAINED ON THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENT OF THE COURSE. THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE AND THE USE OF THE APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC TERMINOLOGY WILL BE PART OF THE EVALUATION. THE FINAL GRADE WILL BE EXPRESSED ON A SCALE OF THIRTY.
