Objectives
The course allows you to deepen your knowledge of advanced methods and algorithms for the numerical processing of audio signals in various professional fields: music, performance, multimedia, entertainment, sound art, interactive and audiovisual installations.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
o Understanding of the terminology used in the numerical processing of audio signals of various kinds.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
o Knowing how to design, implement and characterize systems for the digital processing of audio signals.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT (MAKING JUDGEMENTS)
o Knowing how to evaluate the performance of systems for the digital processing of audio signals.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
o Knowing how to work in a group, knowing how to orally present a topic related to the numerical processing of audio signals.
ABILITY TO LEARN (LEARNING SKILLS)
o Knowing how to apply the knowledge acquired to contexts different from those presented during the course and knowing how to deepen the topics covered using materials other than those proposed.


Prerequisites
FOR THE PROFITABLE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES SET FOR THE STUDENT, THE FOLLOWING PREREQUISITES ARE REQUIRED: KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE ACQUISITION AND PROCESSING OF SIGNALS; KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROBLEMS INHERENT WITH THE MEASURES; ABILITY TO DEFINE THE SOLUTION OF A PROBLEM IN ALGORITHMIC FORM.

ALGORITHMS FOR PROCESSING AUDIO SIGNALS AND MEASUREMENTS ON THE SAME: WIENER FILTERS, COMPRESSION TECHNIQUES, VOCODER, ECHO SUPPRESSION EQUALIZER (12 HOURS OF FRONT LESSON + 10 HOURS OF LABORATORY PRACTICE)
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TECHNIQUES FOR THE PROCESSING OF AUDIO SIGNALS (4 HOURS OF LESSON + 4 HOURS OF LABORATORY PRACTICE)
MICROPHONE ARRAY MANAGEMENT (3 HOURS OF LESSON)
DELAY AND PHASE MEASURES (3 HOURS OF LESSON)
DESIGN, REALIZATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF AN AUDIO SIGNAL PROCESSING SYSTEM (2 HOURS OF LESSON + 10 HOURS OF LABORATORY EXERCISES)
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES THEORETICAL LESSONS AND LABORATORY EXERCISES. DURING THE LABORATORY EXERCISES, THE STUDENTS, DIVIDED BY WORKING GROUPS, ARE ASSIGNED EXERCISES TO BE DEVELOPED TO APPLY WHAT SEEN DURING THE FRONTAL TEACHING HOURS. AT THE END OF THE COURSE A PROJECT TO DEVELOP IS ASSIGNED TO THE DIFFERENT GROUPS. THE PROJECT INCLUDES ALL COURSE CONTENT IN A UNITARY WAY AND ALLOWS STUDENTS TO ACQUIRE THE SKILLS OF DESIGNING, REALIZATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SYSTEMS FOR THE PROCESSING OF AUDIO SIGNALS
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAM WITH EVALUATION IN THIRTIES (THE MINIMUM LEVEL OF PASSING CORRESPONDS TO "18" AND THE MAXIMUM TO "30 cum laude"), WHICH PROVIDES A SINGLE ORAL TEST, OF THE DURATION AVERAGE INDICATIVE OF 60 MINUTES, AND AIMED AT VERIFYING: 1) LEARNING OF THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE HOURS OF LECTURE TEACHING; 2) THE CONTRIBUTION TO THE GROUP PROJECT REALIZED ON A TOPIC ASSIGNED BY THE TEACHER; 3) THE EXPOSURE CAPACITY OF THE TOPICS ADDRESSED; 4) THE AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT IN PROPOSING THE SOLUTION AND IN THE DESIGN OF A SYSTEM FOR THE PROCESSING OF AUDIO SIGNALS
IN MORE DETAIL, THE ORAL EXAM INCLUDES THREE QUESTIONS: THE FIRST WITH REFERENCE TO THE REALIZED PROJECT WILL BE AIMED AT VERIFYING THE DESIGN AND REALIZATION CAPABILITIES OF THE SYSTEMS FOR THE PROCESSING OF SIGNALS THE OTHER TWO ON THE TOPICS DURING THE DURING THE DATE.
TO PASS THE EXAM IT IS NECESSARY TO REACH SUFFICIENCY BOTH IN THE VERIFICATION OF THE LEARNING OF THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE HOURS OF THEORY AND IN THE VERIFICATION (REALIZATION AND DESCRIPTION CAPACITY) OF THE ASSIGNED LABORATORY PROJECT.
THE STUDENT ACHIEVES THE LEVEL OF EXCELLENCE IF THEY SHOW THE ABILITY TO MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE THEORETICAL TOPICS COVERED AND SHOWS THE FULL MASTERY OF THE ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT DURING THE WORKSHOP PROJECT.
