THE COURSE GOALS CONCERN THE FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS OF THE DESIGN PROCESS THAT IS THE SPATIAL COMPOSITION WITHIN THE INTERACTION WITH THE HUMAN BODY. THIS WILL LEAD TO READING AND DESIGNING SPACE IN RELATION TO MEASURES, VIEWS AND THE PATH. THE COURSE AIMS AT FURNISHING THE ESSENTIAL INSTRUMENTS OF THE ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION EXPLORING THE PRACTICE OF THE SPATIAL MODELLING THROUGHOUT THE CONTROL OF THE SPATIAL AND VISUAL RELATIONS WITHIN A WORK WHICH DRAWS TOGETHER IDEATION AND THREE-DIMENSIONAL EXPLORATION. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: TO UNDERSTAND THE DESIGN PROCESS AS A SPATIAL PRACTICE. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: TO ACQUIRE SKILLS IN DESIGNING SPATIAL SEQUENCES; TO READ AND CREATE ARCHITECTURAL SPACES THROUGH THE RELATION AMONG SOLIDS AND VOIDS, CONTINUITIES AND DISCONTINUITIES, RHYTHM AND SURFACE SHAPING, USING VIEWS AND PATHS; LEARNING HOW TO RESPOND TO THE SPECIFICITY OF A SITE. MAKING JUDGEMENTS: CRITICAL READING OF ARCHITECTURAL SPACES THROUGH COMPARISON AMONG A VARIETY OF SOLUTIONS, UNDERSTANDING ANALOGIES AND DIFFERENCES. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: TO COORDINATE VERBAL, GRAPHIC AND SPATIAL COMMUNICATION IN ORDER TO EXPLAIN DESIGN CONTENTS; TO BE ABLE TO WORK IN TEAM. LEARNING SKILLS: TO TRANSFER THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE IN DIFFERENT AREAS AND SITUATIONS. |

THE ARCHITECTURAL SPACE: THEORETICAL AND INTERPRETATIVE ISSUES; INTRODUCTION TO THE EXPERIMENTAL WORK. / READING OF SELECTED DESIGN CASE-STUDIES (EITHER HISTORIC, MODERN OR CONTEMPORARY) WITH THE AIM OF INTERPRETING THE SPATIAL RELATIONS AMONG THE BODY AND THE SPACES. / EXTRACTING, THROUGH A WORK OF DECONSTRUCTION, SOME SPATIAL SOLUTIONS, LOOKING AT RELATIONS BETWEEN PLANES, SOLIDS AND VOIDS AND WITHIN THE RELATION WITH THE HUMAN BODY. / GENERATING NEW SPACES THROUGH A WORK OF MANIPULATION. / DEFINITION OF SPACES RESPONDING TO A PROGRAMME, THUS FURTHER DEVELOPING THE PREVIOUS STUDIED SOLUTIONS. / RELATION WITH A SPECIFIC SITE AND SUBSEQUENT NEW MANIPULATION OF SPACES. / DEFINITION OF THE DESIGN PROJECT THROUGH DRAWINGS AND SOLUTIONS AT VARIOUS SCALES. |
Teaching Methods | |

THE DIDACTIC WORK WILL FOLLOW A NONLINEAR PROCESS OF DEVELOPMENT BASED ON ASERIES OF DESIGN EXERCISES, WHICH WILL GIVE OPPORTUNITIES TO THE STUDENTS OF REFLECTION AND EXPERIMENTATION. THE LECTURES WILL PROVIDE THE USEFUL REFERENCES TO THE EXPERIMENTAL WORK DEVELOPED DURING THE DESIGN LABORATORY. THE STUDIO-COURSE IS BASED ON AN EXTENSIVE USE OF MODELS IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND SPACE IN THE 3 DIMENSIONS AND THEN ON A WORK THROUGH DRAWINGS, INITIALLY WITH THE SECTION AND LATER WITH THE PLAN. THE DESIGN PROCESS, BASED ON SUCCESSIVE THOUGH INDEPENDENT STEPS, WILL LEAD TO CONSIDERING THE ARCHITECTURAL SPACE FIRST AT A CLOSE RANGE AND THEN OVERALL, CONSTRUCTING A PATH AND A SPATIAL SEQUENCE. DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR THE STUDENT WILL HAVE A SKETCH BOOK FOR SKETCHES MADE DURING THE LECTURES AND PERSONAL STUDY. |

ALL THE DESIGN EXERCISES, THE MODELS AND THE DRAWINGS HANDED IN DURING THE YEAR WILL BE SHOWN AT THE EXAM AND REORGANIZED IN AN EXHIBITION WHICH WILL OFFER THE OPPORTUNITY FOR AN EVALUATION OF THE WHOLE DESIGN PROCESS STIMULATING DISCUSSIONS AND REFLECTIONS TOGETHER WITH THE STUDENTS AND THE DESIGNERS INVITED AT THE EVENT AS GUEST CRITICS. AN INDIVIDUAL COLLOQUIUM WILL FOLLOW THE EVENT. THE STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE AN ASSESSMENT FOR EACH PART OF THE WORK, AND THE FINAL MARK WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE DESIGN EXERCISES, THE PERSONAL SKETCH BOOK AND THE FINAL COLLOQUIUM HELD DURING THE EXAM REGARDING THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE COURSE, THE THEORETICAL READINGS AND THE STUDIED DESIGN WORKS. |
