MATH: MANY STUDENTS TAKE MATH 1 CONCURRENTLY WITH THIS COURSE, BUT THE IMPORTANT THING IS THAT YOU ARE VERY COMFORTABLE WITH SINGLE-VARIABLE INTEGRATION AND DIFFERENTIATION. MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS (MATH 2) IS NOT USED IN THIS COURSE, ALTHOUGH VECTORS ARE USED EXTENSIVELY.
PHYSICS: A PREVIOUS PHYSICS COURSE IS CERTAINLY HELPFUL.

THERE WILL BE ONE PROBLEM SET EACH TWO WEEK, DUE AT THE BEGINNING OF THURSDAY'S CLASS. SOLUTIONS WILL BE AVAILABLE DURING THE SECTIONS (SEE BELOW). NEW PROBLEM SETS WILL BE POSTED ON THE WEB ON THURSDAY EVENINGS. TO RECEIVE FULL CREDIT FOR A PROBLEM, IT MUST NOT ONLY BE CORRECT, IT MUST ALSO BE WRITTEN UP NEATLY, WITH CLEAR EXPLANATIONS INVOLVING WORDS.
SECTIONS
IN SECTIONS THE INSTRUCTOR MEETS SMALL GROUPS OF STUDENTS TO CHECK THE SOLUTIONS OF THE HOMEWORK. SECTIONS MEET ONCE EACH TWO WEEKS ON APPOINTMENT. THE PURPOSE OF THE SECTIONS IS TO WORK THROUGH, TOGETHER, THE HOMEWORK PROBLEMS, TO SEE THE SOLUTIONS, AND TO DISCUSS THINGS IN A SMALLER CLASSROOM SETTING. THE TIMES WILL BE ARRANGED TOGETHER. ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED. BUT ASIDE FROM BEING REQUIRED, IT IS SIMPLY A GOOD IDEA TO ATTEND AND TO GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER.

BE CAREFUL NOT TO RELY TOO MUCH ON YOUR CLASSMATES, BECAUSE YOU WILL NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEMS FOR THE EXAMS, OF COURSE.
EXAMS
THERE WILL BE A FINAL ORAL EXAM IN JUNE/JULY/SEPTEMBER AND OTHER SESSIONS IN JANUARY/FEBRUARY, BUT THE HOMEWORK IS AN IMPORTANT, AND ACTUALLY NECESSARY, PART IN THE FINAL EVALUATION.

THERE IS A COSPICUOUS NUMBER OF OLD MIDTERMS AND FINALS POSTED ON THE COURSE WEBPAGE. IF YOU REVIEW THE PROBLEM SETS CAREFULLY AND WORK THROUGH A GOOD NUMBER OF OLD EXAMS, YOU SHOULD DO WELL. BUT CONVERSELY, IF YOU RELY TOO MUCH ON FRIENDS AND DON'T UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM SETS, AND IF YOU DON'T WORK THROUGH MANY OLD EXAMS, THINGS MOST LIKELY WON'T GO SO WELL.
