Objectives
THE COURSE IS ADDRESSED TO THE STUDENTS WHO ARE AT THEIR THIRD YEAR OF A FIVE-YEAR MASTER DEGREE COURSE IN ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING.
THE GENERAL COURSE GOAL IS TO DEVELOP IN THE STUDENTS THE AWARENESS ABOUT THE ARCHITECTURE PROJECT, NOT ONLY INTENDED AS A MEANS FOR TRANSFORMING REALITY, BUT ALSO AS A KNOWLEDGE TOOL , ORIENTING THEM TO THE IDENTIFICATION AND CRITICAL INTERPRETATION OF THE POSSIBLE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN ARCHITECTURE AND EXISTING CONTEXT (URBAN FRAME AND/OR LANDSCAPE).
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: ABILITY TO EXPLORE AND DESCRIBE THE CONTEXT IN WHICH THE ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT IS PLACED IN ORDER TO POINT OUT, IN AN URBAN FRAME AND/OR IN AN EXISTING NATURAL LANDSCAPE, THOSE ELEMENTS THAT CAN HAVE AN INFLUENCE ON AN ARCHITECTURE PROJECT; THE CONCEPT OF "CONTEXT" IS VERY WIDELY INTENDED; IT INCLUDES BOTH THE PHYSICAL ASPECTS (THE FORMAL STRUCTURE OF THE LANDSCAPE, THE URBAN FABRIC, TOPOGRAPHY, THE SHAPE OF THE SITE, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BUILDINGS AND OPEN SPACES, THE ACCESSIBILITY, THE MATERIALS, THE CLIMATE, THE SUNSHINE, THE COLORS, THE SOUNDS) OF THE PROJECT SITE AND THE IMMATERIAL ISSUES (THE HISTORY OF THE PLACE, THE SOCIAL CONTEXT AND THE WAY OF USING THE SPACES).
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: DEVELOP A CONSCIOUS PRACTICE OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AS A SYNTHESIS OF AN INVESTIGATIONS PROCESS WHICH STARTS FROM ANALYTICAL ISSUES (CHARACTER OF THE SITE, THE FUNCTIONAL PROGRAM, LAWS AND BUILDING REGULATIONS, GENERAL GOALS OF THE PROJECT) AND COMES TO THE FINAL PROPOSAL, ENCOURAGING THE STUDENTS' ACQUISITION OF THE TOOLS TO BUILD A PERSONAL AND CONSCIOUS ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE; ABILITY IN DEFINING HIERARCHIES AND PRIORITIES IN ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION, ACQUIRING KNOWLEDGE IN MANAGING AND RELATE THE DIFFERENT SCALES OF THE PROJECT ONE TO EACH OTHER.
MAKING JUDGEMENTS: ABILITY IN RECOGNIZING AND IDENTIFYING - BASED ON THE EXISTING CONTEXT AND THE REQUIRED FUNCTION - THE MOST APPROPRIATE METHODS TO DESIGN A SIMPLE BUILDING, OPTIMIZING THE SEQUENCE OF THE VARIOUS STEPS OF THE DESIGN PROCESS, AND THE TRANSITION FROM ONE STEP TO THE OTHER; DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO PLACE THE ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT AS PART OF THE EXPERIMENTS MADE BY THE DISCIPLINARY CULTURE, BOTH WITH REGARD TO THE SPECIFIC TOPIC TO DEAL WITH THAT, AT A MORE GENERAL LEVEL, WITHIN THE OVERALL ARCHITECTURAL DEBATE.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: ABILITY IN WORKING IN GROUPS AND PRESENTING ORALLY AN ISSUE RELATED TO THE TOPICS OF PROPOSED RESEARCH AND STUDY; ABILITY IN INTEGRATING VERBAL AND WRITTEN COMMUNICATION AND GRAPHICS TO ILLUSTRATE THE CONTENTS OF AN ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT.
LEARNING SKILLS: ABILITY IN APPLYING THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE CONCERNING THE ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION IN CONTEXTS (BOTH URBAN AND LANDSCAPE CONTEXTS) THAT CAN BE DIFFERENT FROM THOSE PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE; ABILITY IN DEALING WITH THE COURSE TOPICS BY CONDUCTING DISCIPLINARY INSIGHTS FROM DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW.
Prerequisites
A BASIC KNOWLEDGE ABOUT METHODS AND TECHNIQUES OF ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION AS WELL AS IN HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE AND ARCHITECTURAL DRAWING AND SURVEY. IT IS ALSO VERY USEFUL THAT STUDENTS HAVE A BROAD GENERAL CULTURE, IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND AND DEEPEN THE LINKS BETWEEN THE ARCHITECTURE AND OTHER ARTS (LITERATURE, VISUAL ARTS AND PLASTIC, MUSIC, PHOTOGRAPHY, CINEMA) AND OTHER SOCIAL PHENOMENA.
Contents
THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO TWO SEMESTERS: IN THE FIRST SEMESTER THE COURSE EXPLORES THE METHODS FOR THE UNDERSTANDING AND INTERPRETATION OF SITES, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE URBAN CONTEXT. IN THE SECOND SEMESTER THE STUDENTS DEAL WITH METHODS AND TOOLS OF THE ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION BY APPLYING THEM TO A CASE STUDY: AN ARCHITECTURE PROJECT IN AN EXISTING URBAN CONTEXT.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE COVERS LECTURES AND CLASSROOM EXERCISES. THE LECTURES DEAL WITH THE FUNDAMENTAL THEORY OF ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITION. IN CLASSROOM EXERCISES THE STUDENTS – IN SOME CASES DIVIDED INTO WORKING GROUPS OF A MAXIMUM OF TWO/THREE PEOPLE – FACE SOME SMALL-SCALE PROJECTS. THE SERIES OF PROJECTS INCLUDE ALL THE CONTENT OF TEACHING AND ARE AIMED TO GIVE THE ABILITY TO DESIGN A SIMPLE BUILDING, AND TO WORK IN TEAMS AS WELL. EACH STUDENT INDIVIDUALLY EXPLORES A SPECIFIC ASPECT OF THE PROJECT.
Verification of learning
THE ASSESSMENT REGARDS IF AND HOW THE EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED BY THE STUDENTS IS DONE THROUGH DISCUSSION OF THE PROJECT AND THROUGH AN ORAL INTERVIEW.
THE CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION SHALL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE CONTINUITY OF THE STUDENTS’ ENGAGEMENT DURING THE COURSE AND THEIR ABILITY TO IMPROVE THEIR LEARNING PROCESS DURING THE COURSE.
CHECKING PROCEDURES ALSO PROVIDE FOR INFORMAL TALKS AT WORK IN THE CLASSROOM, CHECKS "IN PROGRESS" DURING THE COURSE AND TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE LEVEL OF STUDENT PARTICIPATION.
