Objectives
THE FIRST PART OF THE COURSE AIMS TO PRESENT STATISTICAL TOOLS FOR DATA ANALYSIS, PROBABILITY AND STATISTICAL INFERENCE.
THE SECOND PART OF THE COURSE AIMS TO PRESENT COMPONENTS AND OPERATING MECHANISMS OF A COMPUTER SYSTEM, HOW THE INFORMATION IS REPRESENTED AND ELABORATED IN A PERSONAL COMPUTER.

KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED:
BASIC TOOLS OF DATA ANALYSIS AND STATISTICAL INFERENCE
ACQUISITION OF BASIC COMPETENCES ON THE OPERATING PRINCIPLE OF A COMPUTER SYSTEM AND ON INFORMATION CODING ALONG WITH USING OF SOME APPLICATIONS FOR DATA ANALYSIS (SPREADSHEET).

THE MAIN SKILLS ACQUIRED ALLOW STUDENTS:
TO PROPERLY SUMMARIZE A DATABASE;
TO INTERPRET A STATISTICAL REPORT;
TO PROPERLY USE PROBABILITY THEORY AND STATISTICAL INFERENCE TO FACE AGRICULTURAL PROBLEMS.
TO USE A COMPUTER FOR SIMPLE DATA ANALYSIS;
TO USE A COMPUTER TO ORGANIZE AND PRESENT THE RESULTS OF DATA ANALYSIS;
TO APPLY THE UNDERSTOOD KNOWLEDGE TO DIFFERENT CONTESTS FROM THOSE PRESENTED.
Prerequisites
THE KNOWLEDGE OF BASIC CONCEPTS OF MATHEMATICS IS REQUIRED

UNIT I: STATISTICS (6 CFU)
DATA ANALYSIS (10 HOURES): STATISTICAL SURVEY,DATA ANALYSIS IN UNIVARIATE AND BIVARIATE DOMAIN; GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATIONS; LOCATION, VARIABILITY AND SHAPE STATISTICAL INDICES; DEPENDENCE BETWEEN TWO CHARACTERS.

PROBABILITY (14 HOURES): INTRODUCTION TO ELEMENTARY PROBABILITY THEORY, RANDOM VARIABLES (CONTINUOUS AND DISCRETE), BASIC PROBABILITY MODELS.

INFERENCE (14 HOURES): SAMPLING THEORY; PARAMETRIC ESTIMATION, HYPOTHESIS TESTING, CONFIDENCE INTERVALS,

LINEAR REGRESSION MODEL (4 HOURES): DEFINITION, ESTIMATION AND TESTING;
UNIT II: INFORMATICS (3CFU)
ELABORATION SYSTEMS: MAIN COMPONENTS AND THEIR ORGANIZATION; CODING AND INFORMATION PROCESSING INFORMATION. (1.5 CFU)
ORGANIZATION AND DATA ANALYSIS: THE EXCEL PROGRAM; (1.5 CFU)
Teaching Methods
THE TWO UNITS ARE BASED ON 63 HOURS OF CLASS LECTURES: 42 HOURS OF STATISTICS AND 21 HOURS OF INFORMATICS.
THE TWO UNITS INCLUDE THEORETICAL LECTURES AND PRACTICAL LECTURES (MAINLY BASED ON EXERCISES AND CASE STUDIES).
Verification of learning
THE STATISTICS MODULE INCLUDES TWO INTER-COURSE TESTS, MADE BY EXERCISES ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:
1) FIRST TEST: DATA ANALYSIS (MAX SCORE: 7) AND PROBABILITY (MAX SCORE 9). THE TEST IS PASSED IF THE TOTAL SCORE IS AT LEAST 10.
2)SECOND TEST: STATISTICAL INFERENCE (MAXIMUM SCORE 10 POINTS, MINIMUM SCORE 6 POINTS TO BE PASSED)
DURING THE WRITTEN TESTING, ONLY USE OF THE SCIENTIFIC CALCULATOR IS ADMITTED.
ALL STUDENTS THAT HAVE PASSED THE INTER-COURSE TESTS DO NOT HAVE TO CARRY OUT THE EXERCISES ON THE CORRESPONDING TOPICS (FOR EXAMPLE: IF THEY HAVE PASSED THE SECOND INTER-COURSE STATISTICAL TEST THEY DO NOT HAVE TO CARRY OUT THE EXEECISES OF STATISTICAL INFERENCE).
THE FINAL SCORE OF THE WRITTEN EXAM IS GIVEN BY THE WEIGTHED MEAN OF THE SCORES OF THE TWO UNITS (AND THE MINIMUM SCORE FOR EACH OF THEM IS 18).
THE ORAL INTEVIEW (MAX SCORE 30) IS BASED ON THREE QUESTIONS SUBMITTED TO THE STUDENTS.
THE INFORMATICS MODULE INCLUDES TWO TESTS LASTING 60 MINUTES EACH. THE TWO TESTS WILL BE ON THE TWO PRINCIPAL TOPICS OF THE COURSE.
1) THE FIRST TEST IS A MULTIPLE RESPONSE TEST WITH A MAXIMUM OF 26 QUESTIONS CONCERNING THE FIRST THEORETICAL PART OF THE COURSE (1, 5CFU).
2) IN THE SECOND TEST TO BE CARRIED OUT IN THE LABORATORY WITH THE USE OF THE PC, THE STUDENT WILL BE PROVIDED WITH A FILE (EXCEL SHEET) CONTAINING A SERIES OF DATA ALREADY STRUCTURED. THE STUDENT WILL BE ASKED TO CARRY OUT SOME PROCESSING ON SUCH DATA, PRODUCE SPECIFIC CHARTS AND ANALYSIS REPORTS THROUGH PIVOT TABLES. THE FINAL VOTE WILL BE OBTAINED AS A MEDIA OF THE SCORES OBTAINED FOR THE TWO TESTS. THE FINAL VOTE IS CALCULATED AS THE AVERAGE SCORE ACHIEVED IN BOTH TESTS WITH THE MINIMUM VALUE OF 18/30. IT IS INTENDED THAT IT IS COMPULSORY TO PARTICIPATE IN BOTH TESTS TO OBTAIN THE FINAL SCORE.
STUDENTS WHO WILL NOT PASS THE INER-COURSE TESTS WILL BE ABLE TO ACCESS THE EXAM ACCORDING TO THE CALENDAR. THE REGULAR EXAM THE INFORMATICS MODULE WILL BE COMPOSED OF TWO 60 MINUTE CONSECUTIVE TESTS EVERYONE WITH THE SAME METHODS AND CONTENTS OF THE INTER-COURSE TESTS. THE STUDENT MUST OBTAIN AN AVERAGE MINIMUM SCORE OF 18/30.

THE FINAL SCORE OF THE EXAM IS GIVEN BY THE WEIGHTED MEAN OF THE SCORE OBAINED IN THE TWO UNITS (STATICS AND INFORMATICS).

AN ADDITIONAL “CUM LADE” MAY BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH THE MAXIMUM SCORE (30/30) WHO HAVE DEMONSTRATED AUTONOMY AND ABILITY TO FACE INFORMATICS AND STATISTICAL PROBLEMS.
