Objectives
THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO GAIN KNOWLEDGE OF THE NORMAL FUNCTIONING OF ORGANS AND APPARATUSES OF THE HUMAN BODY, AS A PREREQUISITE TO BE ABLE TO APPROACH THE STUDY OF THE PATHOGENESIS, SYMPTOMS AND THERAPIES IN DENTISTRY.

KNOWLEDGE:
- SCIENTIFIC METHODS IN HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY;
- FUNCTIONING AND FUNCTION REGULATION OF ALL THE ORGANS AND APPARATUSES OF THE HUMAN BODY IN NORMAL CONDITIONS;
- NORMAL VALUES OF THE PRINCIPAL PHYSIOLOGICAL VARIABLES.

ABILITIES:
- TO BE ABLE TO DESCRIBE THE FUNCTIONING OF ORGANS AND APPARATUSES OF THE HUMAN BODY IN A CLEAR AND PRECISE WAY, SUCH THAT A GENERIC LISTENER (THE PATIENT) CAN UNDERSTAND;
- TO BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE ABNORMAL VALUES OF PHYSIOLOGICAL VARIABLES;
- TO BE ABLE TO SEARCH INFORMATION AND UPGRADES FROM THE SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE AND TO RECOGNIZE THE VALUE AND THE LIMIT OF THE AVAILABLE SCIENTIFIC DATA.
Prerequisites
KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONCEPTS OF PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY, BIOCHEMISTRY, BIOLOGY, HUMAN ANATOMY AND STATISTICS ALREADY INCLUDED IN THE CURRICULUM OF THE COURSES OF THE FIRST YEARS OF THE DEGREE IN MEDICINE AND SURGERY.

PHYSIOLOGY MODULE

NERVOUS SYSTEM (13 H LECTURES, 4 H INTEGRATIVE DIDACTIC): DISTRIBUTION AND COMPOSITION OF FLUIDS IN THE HUMAN BODY, MEMBRANE POTENTIAL, RESTING POTENTIAL, ACTION POTENTIAL; PHYSIOLOGY OF NERVE AND MUSCLE CELLS, MAJOR NEUROTRANSMITTER SYSTEMS, SENSE ORGANS AND AFFERENT PATHWAYS, REFLEXES, CONTROL OF POSTURE AND MOVEMENT, SIGHT, HEARING, VESTIBULAR ORGAN, AUTONOMIC AND ENTERIC NERVOUS SYSTEM; THERMOREGULATION, FEEDING BEHAVIOR, SLEEP, LEARNING AND MEMORY, ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY OF THE HEART; PHYSIOLOGICAL FUNDAMENTS FOR ECG AND EEG.

CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM (6 H LECTURES, 3 H INTEGRATIVE DIDACTIC): MECHANICS OF THE HEART PUMP; DYNAMICS OF BLOOD AND LYMPH FLOW; CARDIOVASCULAR REGULATORY MECHANISMS; CIRCULATION THROUGH SPECIAL REGIONS.

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM (7 H LECTURES, 2 H INTEGRATIVE DIDACTIC): MECHANICS OF VENTILATION; PULMONARY FUNCTION; GAS TRANSPORT; REGULATION OF BREATHING.

RENAL SYSTEM (4 H LECTURES, 2 H INTEGRATIVE DIDACTIC): RENAL FUNCTION AND MICTURITION; REGULATION OF THE COMPOSITION AND VOLUME OF THE EXTRACELLULAR FLUID; ACID-BASE BALANCE.

DIGESTIVE SYSTEM (5 H LECTURES, 3 H INTEGRATIVE DIDACTIC): PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ORGANS OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM; DIGESTION, ABSORPTION AND FOUNDAMENTALS OF NUTRITION; MOTILITY OF THE GASTRO-INTESTINAL TRACT; SECRETING AND METABOLIC FUNCTIONS OF THE LIVER.

ENDOCRINE GLANDS (5 H LECTURES, 1 H INTEGRATIVE DIDACTIC): THYROID; ENDOCRINE PANCREAS; ADRENAL CORTEX AND MEDULLA; SERUM CALCIUM HOMEOSTASIS; PITUITARY GLAND; GONADS, REPRODUCTIVE PHYSIOLOGY; PHYSIOLOGY OF GROWTH.

MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY MODULE (16 H LECTURES, 6 H INTEGRATIVE DIDACTIC):
SALIVARY GLANDS PHYSIOLOGY, ORAL TISSUES DEFENSE MECHANISMS, TEETH ERUPTION, DENTAL PLAQUE FORMATION, MAXILLARY DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH, TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT: ANTROPOLOGY AND PHYSIOLOGY, MASTICATORY MUSCLES AND CHEWING PHYSIOLOGY, POSTURE DEVELOPMENT AND RELATION WITH THE TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JONT.

ODONTO-STOMATOLOGY MODULE (16 H LECTURES, 6 H INTEGRATIVE DIDACTIC):
INTRODUCTION TO THE STOMATOGNATHIC SYSTEM AND ITS FUNCTIONS, DENTAL SYSTEM EMBRIOLOGY, DENTAL TISSUES, TASTE, SMELL, SWALLOWING, VOMITING, FOREIGN BODY IN THE AIRWAYS AND MECHANISMS OF PROTECTION OF THE AIRWAYS, PHONATION, PRINCIPLES OF ANATOMY OF THE STRUCTURES RELATED TO THE TREATED TOPICS.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF A TOTAL OF 77 HOURS DISTRIBUTED IN TWO SEMESTERS AND DIVIDED INTO 56 HOURS FOR LECTURES AND 21 HOURS FOR INTEGRATIVE DIDACTIC ACTIVITIES COMPRISING EXERCISES, SEMINARS, PROCEEDINGS FROM SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE WITH COLLEGIAL DISCUSSIONS ON EXPERIMENTAL METHODS.
CLASS ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. FOR ADMISSION TO THE FINAL EXAM STUDENTS MUST ATTEND AT LEAST 75% OF THE TOTAL NUMBER OF HOURS OF THE COURSE.
Verification of learning
AT THE END OF EACH LESSON STUDENTS WILL BE ASKED TO ANSWER A WRITTEN QUESTION FOR SELF-EVALUATION. THE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR THE FINAL EXAM SCORE BUT WILL BE COLLEGIALLY AND ANONYMOUSLY DISCUSSED TO EVIDENCE POSSIBLE WEAK POINTS IN LEARNING OR IN THE DESCRIPTION OF THE ARGUMENTS. THE MEANING OF THESE TESTS IS TO GIVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO REACH THE BEST PREPARATION FOR THE FINAL EXAM.
THE FINAL EVALUATION WILL CONSIST OF AN ORAL EXAM. THIS EXAM IS AIMED VERIFY THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE ARGUMENTS OF THE PROGRAM AND THE ABILITY TO RESPOND TO SPECIFIC QUESTIONS, SIMILAR TO THOSE PROPOSED DURING THE COURSE, IN A CLEAR, PRECISE AND CONCISE WAY.
