Objectives
APPLIED BIOLOGY REPRESENTS THE FIRST STEP OF THE BIOMEDICAL TRAINING PATH
PRINCIPAL AIM OF THE APPLIED BIOLOGY COURSE IS TO PROVIDE THE STUDENT OF PROFICIENCY IN THE UNDERSTANDING OF CLASSICAL AND ADVANCED CONCEPTS IN CELL BIOLOGY
THE MAIN KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED WILL BE:
1. THE CONCEPT OF STRUCTURE FUNCTION RELATIONSHIP
2. THE MOLECULAR BASES AND MECHANISMS OF THE MAIN CELLULAR FUNCTIONS
3. MAINTENANCE MECHANISMS OF CELL COMPARTMENTS
4. REGULATORY MECHANISMS CELL FUNCTIONS

THE MAIN SKILLS TO BE ACQUIRED WILL BE:
1. IDENTIFY THE MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR ORIGIN OF HEREDITARY AND ACQUIRED PATHOLOGIES.
2. DEMONSTRATING SKILLS IN UNDERSTANDING CLASSIC AND ADVANCED CONCEPTS OF CELL BIOLOGY.
3. ACQUIRED ABILITY TO INTEGRATE BIOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE WITH CLINICAL KNOWLEDGE, TO ASSESS ITS COMPLEXITY AND TO MAKE JUDGMENTS ON THE BASIS OF AVAILABLE EVIDENCE

1. PROPERTIES OF CELL MEMBRANES
2. AEROBIC RESPIRATION - BIOGENESIS AND MAINTAINANCE OF THE MITOCHONDRIAL NETWORK - MITOCHONDRIAL DISEASES
3. INTRACELLULAR SORTING AND MAINTENANCE OF CELLULAR COMPARTMENTS- CYTOSOL/NUCLEUS TRANSPORT – PROTEIN TRANSLOCATION TO MITOCHONDRION, PEROXYSOMES, ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM - PEROXYSOMAL DISEASES
4. THE SECRETORY PATHWAY –THE ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM: POSTTRANSLATIONAL MODIFICATIONS AND PROTEIN QUALITY CONTROL – MOLECULAR MECHANISMS OF VESICULAR TRANSPORT – DISEASES OF VESICULAR TRAFFICKING - THE GOLGI COMPLEX- EXOCYTOSIS
5. FUNCTIONS AND MAINTENANCE OF THE ENDOSOMAL COMPARTMENT – FAGOCYTOSIS, AUTOPHAGY, RECEPTOR MEDIATED ENDOCYTOSIS - TRANSCYTOSIS - LYSOSOMAL AND ENDOSOMAL DISEASES
6. CYTOSKELETON: INTERMEDIATE FILAMENTS - MECHANISMS OF MICROTUBULES AND ACTIN POLYMERIZATION, MOLECULAR MOTORS CILIA/FLAGELLA -ROLE OF CYTOSKELETON COMPONENTS IN HUMAN DISEASES
7. CELL CYCLE CONTROL - CELLULAR REPRODUCTION: MITOSIS AND MEIOSIS - FERTILIZATION
8. GENETICS PRINCIPLES - MENDELIAN INHERITANCE, INCLUDING MULTIPLE ALLELISM, GENE INTERACTIONS AND SEX-LINKED TRANSMISSION - PEDIGREES
THE COURSE INCLUDES INTERACTIVE EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES (ADI) IN WHICH CRITICAL READING AND PRESENTATION OF SCIENTIFIC WORK RELATING TO THE CONTENTS OF THE COURSE WILL BE CARRIED OUT

THE MODULE OF ODONTOSTOMATOLOGICAL DISEASES WILL CONCENTRATE ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:
1.BIOLOGY, GENETICS AND EVOLUTION OF THE ORAL CAVITY AND THE STOMATOGNATIC SYSTEM
2.BIOLOGY AND GENETICS OF DENTAL PATHOLOGIES
3.BIOLOGY AND GENETICS OF THE PATHOLOGIES OF THE ORO-MAXILLO-FACIAL DISTRICT
4. MAIN SYSTEMIC GENETIC PATHOLOGIES OF DENTAL INTEREST
5.BIOLOGY AND GENETICS OF RARE DISEASES IN ODONTOSTOMATOLOGY

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES FRONTAL TEACHING ACTIVITIES (ADF) AND INTERACTIVE TEACHING ACTIVITIES (ADI), BROKEN DOWN AS FOLLOWS:
ADF: CLASSROOM LESSONS ON ALL THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE;
ADI: IN ITINERE SELF-ASSESSMENT TESTS BY MEANS OF MULTIPLE ANSWER QUIZ;
DESCRIPTION OF THE MAIN METHODS OF MICROSCOPY IN THE LABORATORY; GROUP WORK FOR THE REALIZATION OF SEMINARS AND DISCUSSIONS ON TOPICS RELATED TO THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE
Verification of learning
ORAL TEST WILL VERIFY THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF CELL STRUCTURES AND THEIR RELATED FUNCTION AND TEST THE ABILITY TO CORRELATE CELL DYSFUNCTION TO INHERITED OR ACQUIRED HUMAN PATHOLOGIES.
THE EXAM RESULTS WILL BE DECIDED COLLEGIALLY BY THE COMMISSION AND EXPRESSED IL THIRTIES
