Objectives | |

TO HELP STUDENTS TO IMPROVE THEIR LANGUAGE SKILLS IN ENGLISH DEVELOPING UPPER-INTERMEDIATE LINGUISTIC AND COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE (LEVEL B1/B2 OF THE EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES DESIGNED BY THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE). TO OFFER STUDENTS THE TOOLS OF PRAGMATICS, SOCIOLINGUISTICS AND DISCOURSE ANALYSIS FOR A CRITICAL APPROACH TO LANGUAGE, ISSUES AND SPECIALIZED TEXTS, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO MEDIA AND POLITICAL LANGUAGE. EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND USE SELF-CONFIDENTLY EVERYDAY EXPRESSIONS AND SPECIALIZED LANGUAGE RELATED TO THE SOCIAL SCIENCES. 2. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND PRODUCE EDUCATIONAL, SEMI-SPECIALIZED AND SPECIALIZED TEXTS ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE, ENGLISH LINGUISTICS AND SPECIALIZED ENGLISH LANGUAGES. |

LESSONS WILL DEAL WITH MEDIA DISCOURSE, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE NOTION OF FREE PRESS, NEWSWORTHINESS, TRANSITIVITY, MEDIA VOICES AND FAKE NEWS (20H). SPECIALIZED SEMINARS WILL DEAL WITH SOCIOLINGUISTIC, POLITICAL AND GEOPOLITICAL CURRENT ISSUES, WITH REFERENCE TO THE EUROPEAN UNION, THE UNITED KINGDOM, THE UNITED STATES AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO MEDIA DISCOURSE (20H) WRITING AND TEAMWORK ACTIVITIES WILL BE OFFERED. |

- A WRITTEN EXAM (TIME ALLOWED: 1 HOUR) INCLUDING MULTIPLE READING COMPREHENSION, TEXT COMPLETION AND TEXT PRODUCTION. - AN ORAL EXAM (TIME ALLOWED: 15-20 MINUTES) CONSISTING IN A GENERAL CONVERSATION IN ENGLISH AND IN THE DISCUSSION OF THE COURSE CONTENTS (LECTURES AND SEMINARS). TO BE ADMITTED TO THE ORAL EXAM IT IS NECESSARY TO OBTAIN AT LEAST 15 POINTS OUT OF 25 IN THE WRITTEN EXAM. THE FINAL MARK IS EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS. |
