Objectives
The teaching is organized in a single module. It aims to achieve a linguistic-communicative competence at least at level A2-B1 of the European reference framework articulated by the Council of Europe. Students will have to become aware of approaches and insights relating to informative and semi-specialized texts. The student must be able to understand and use everyday expressions and semi-specialized terms related to the social sciences with ease. The student must be able to understand informative and semi-specialized texts relating to the English language and linguistics and to specialized languages in English. Furthermore, students will have to acquire the tools of pragmatics, sociolinguistics and discourse analysis for a critical approach to specialized languages, themes and texts, with particular reference to media and political language. The student must be able to understand and use everyday expressions and specialized terminology relating to the social sciences with ease. The student must be able to understand and produce informative, semi-specialized and specialist texts relating to the English language and linguistics and to specialized languages in English.
Contents
THE COURSE WILL BE STRUCTURED INTO TWO DIFFERENT PARTS:
PART I: GRAMMAR: PHONOLOGY, MORPHOLOGY, LEXICON, SYNTAX
(B1 / B2 LEVEL)
PART II: CULTURE: TRANSLATION STUDIES. AIMS: TO PROVIDE A FULL THRESHOLD KNOWLEDGE (B2) IN ORDER TO ACQUIRE A BETTER AND COMPLEX AWARENESS OF THE GRAMMATICAL ASPECTS (CONCERNING PHONETICS, LEXICON, MORPHOLOGY AND SYNTAX) OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND ITS USES IN THE MEDIA.
A SPECIAL FOCUS WILL BE GIVEN TO TRANSLATION IN MEDIA IN THE SECOND PART OF THE COURSE.
Verification of learning
For each module there is an exam, which includes both a written and an oral test. The one-hour written test is to be held on computer stations and includes multiple choice exercises, text comprehension, text completion and transformation. The oral exam lasting 15-20 minutes includes a general conversation in English and discussion of the teaching contents (lectures and seminars).
