Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE NECESSARY TO UNDERSTAND THE ECONOMIC DYNAMICS IN INTERNATIONAL LONG-TERM SCENARIOS, THROUGH A GLOBAL VISION AND AN UNDERSTANDING OF COMPLEXITY. GEOPOLITICAL EVENTS SHAPE AND TRANSFORM THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH THE ECONOMIC ACTORS OPERATE AND, IN LAST TIMES, SUCH EVENTS HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO CREATE GREATER COMPLEXITY AND UNCERTAINTY. THE COURSE INTENDS TO SET THE BASIS FOR UNDERSTANDING THE MAIN DYNAMICS RELATED TO GEOPOLITICS AND ECONOMIC BEHAVIOR OF INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET, IN COMPARATIVE TERMS, THE STRUCTURE OF PHENOMENA AND THE DYNAMICS OF INTERNATIONAL HISTORICAL-ECONOMIC PROBLEMS. THE COURSE WILL ALLOW THEM TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING TO DEVELOPMENT AND INTERVENTION PROGRAMS AS WELL AS TO STUDY AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES IN INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS.

A WELL ESTABLISHED KNOWLEDGE OF INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC HISTORY AND PRINCIPLES OF MACRO-ECONOMICS IS RECOMMENDED

THE COURSE AIMS TO DEEPEN THE EXPLORATION OF THE PROCESSES OF GLOBALIZATION, DIVERGENCE AND CONVERGENCE BETWEEN DIFFERENT AREAS IN THE WORLD BY ADOPTING AN ECONOMIC-HISTORY PERSPECTIVE. THE FIRST PART OF THE COURSE FOCUSES ON THE LONG-TERM DYNAMICS OF THE MODERN AGE, THROUGH THE NOTION OF WORLD SYSTEMS ELABORATED BY BRAUDEL AND WALLERSTEIN AND THE NEW INTERPRETATIONS PROVIDED BY THE CONCEPTS OF "GREAT DIVERGENCE" AND "SMALL DIVERGENCE". THE SECOND PART OF THE COURSE FOCUSES ON RECENT DEVELOPMENTS, FROM THE COLLAPSE OF GLOBAL CAPITALISM AT THE TIME OF WORLD WAR I, TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW INTERNATIONAL ECONOMY AFTER WORLD WAR II, ENDING WITH THE GREAT EXPANSION OF THE LATE TWENTIETH CENTURY. IN PARTICULAR, THE COURSE WILL DEEPEN:
- THE FIRST GLOBALIZATION;
- THE WORLD SYSTEMS ELABORATED BY BRAUDEL AND WALLERSTEIN;
- THE CAUSES OF WORLD DIVERGENCE: GREAT DIVERGENCE AND SMALL DIVERGENCE;
- EUROPEAN INDUSTRIALIZATION
- EUROPE, AMERICA AND ASIA AFTER INDUSTRIALIZATION PROCESS;
- THE DEVELOPMENT OF INTERNATIONAL CAPITALISM (XIX-XX CENTURY);
- THE END OF CAPITALISM "GOLDEN AGE", THE TWO WORLD WARS AND THE BIRTH OF TOTALITARIANISM;
- THE NEW ECONOMIC ORDER OF THE WORLD;
- THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW GLOBAL CAPITALISM;
- GLOBALIZATION AND INEQUALITY

Teaching Methods
FRONTAL LECTURES, SEMINARS, ANALYSIS OF ARCHIVAL AND MULTIMEDIAL SOURCES
Verification of learning
THE EXAM WILL CONSIST OF AN ORAL EXAMINATION ABOUT THE TOPICS DISCUSSED DURING THE COURSE. THE EXAMINATION WILL VERIFY THE ACQUISITION OF THE METHODOLOGICAL AND THEORETICAL TOOLS AND OF THE ABILITY TO USE THEM FOR THE ANALYSIS OF THESTUDIED CASES. THE TEST WILL HAVE AN INDICATIVE DURATION OF 15-20 MINUTES.
