Objectives
THE AIM OF THIS COURSE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE APPROPRIATE TOOLS TO ACQUIRE A LINGUISTIC COMPETENCE IN SPANISH MAPPED AT LEAST AT THE B1 LEVEL OF THE EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES. THE COURSE INTENDS TO DEVELOP THE FOUR BASIC SKILLS WITH AN INTEGRATED APPROACH (READING AND LISTENING COMPREHENSION PLUS WRITING AND SPEAKING PRODUCTION), AND TO BUILD A GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF SPANISH BY PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH THE PHONETIC, GRAMMATICAL, LEXICAL AND NOTIO-FUNCTIONAL RESOURCES OF THE LANGUAGE. THE STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO READ AND UNDERSTAND THE TEXTS S/HE STUDIED; USE PHRASES AND EXPRESSIONS OF FREQUENT USE; HOLD A CONVERSATION IN SPANISH ON GENERAL THEMES; GIVE OPINIONS, EXPRESS NEEDS AND DESCRIBE PEOPLE, THINGS, PLACES, ETC; READ AND UNDERSTAND TEXTS IN THE SPANISH LANGUAGE; RECOGNISE THE FORMAL ELEMENTS THAT MAKE UP THE GRAMMAR SYSTEM OF SPANISH LANGUAGE. AT THE END OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE ACQUIRED A GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE LANGUAGE SUITABLE FOR A CEFR A2/B1 LEVEL.

THE STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO READ AND UNDERSTAND THE PROPOSED TEXTS, AS WELL AS USE SENTENCES AND EXPRESSIONS OF COMMON USAGE. S/HE SHOULD ALSO PROVE TO BE ABLE TO MAKE BRIEF SUMMARIES OF TOPICS SUGGESTED FOR DISCUSSION. SPECIALIZED TERMINOLOGY WILL BE INTRODUCED THROUGH READING AND ANALYZING PIECES OF NEWS FROM SPANISH PRESS. DURING THE COURSE, DIVERSE AUTHENTIC MATERIALS WILL BE PRESENTED IN ORDER TO BROADEN THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE CULTURE AND LANGUAGE OF SPANISH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES.

- PHONOLOGICAL AND PHONETIC SYSTEM (DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ORALITY) AND WRITING; SYLLABLE AND SYLLABIC DIVISION; ACCENTUAL SYSTEM; WRITING AND ACCENTUATION).
- GRAMMAR: THE SPANISH VERBAL SYSTEM.THE INDICATIVE. THE GERUND. VERBS SER/ESTAR, HAY/ ESTÁ(N), HABER/TENER, PEDIR/PREGUNTAR, LLEVAR/TRAER. VERBAL PEROPHRASIS.
- THE NOUN PHRASE. NOUNS. ADJECTIVES. DEICTIS. POSSESSIVE. INDEFINITE. PERSONAL PRONOUNS. PREPOSITIONS. CONJUNCTIONS. ADVERBS.
- LEXICON
- CULTURAL ELEMENTS: BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE CULTURE, HISTORY GEOGRAPHY, ETC. OF HISPANIC COUNTRIES.
Teaching Methods
FACE-TO-FACE LESSONS. CLASSES WILL BE TAUGHT IN SPANISH.
Verification of learning
THE EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN AND AN ORAL PART. PASSING THE WRITTEN PART ENTITLES STUDENTS TO SIT THE ORAL PART.
- A WRITTEN EXAM (TIME ALLOWED: 1 HOUR) TO BE TAKEN ON A COMPUTER AND INCLUDING MULTIPLE CHOICE EXERCISES, READING COMPREHENSION, TEXT COMPLETION AND TRANSFORMATION.
- AN ORAL EXAM (TIME ALLOWED: 15-20 MINUTES) CONSISTING IN A GENERAL CONVERSATION IN SPANISH AND IN THE DISCUSSION OF THE COURSE CONTENTS.

ATTENDANCE MODE NON COMPULSORY BUT HIGHLY ADVISABLE. STUDENTS ARE REMINDED THAT THEY CAN SIT THE WRITTEN PART OF THE EXAMINATION UP TO A MAXIMUM OF TWO TIMES DURING THE ORDINARY EXAM SESSIONS (SUMMER AND AUTUMN SESSIONS) AND UP A MAXIMUM OF ONE TIME DURING THE WINTER EXTRA EXAM SESSION. EXAMINATION FAILURE DURING A SESSION RESULTS IN INELIGIBILITY OF THE STUDENT TO RE-SIT EITHER THE WRITTEN OR THE ORAL PART OF THE SAME EXAMINATION DURING THAT SESSION. SITTING TWO EXAMINATIONS PERTAINING TO COURSES OF DIFFERENT LEVELS DURING THE SAME SESSION IS FORBIDDEN.
