Objectives
GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES:
THE COURSE AIMS TO ILLUSTRATE THE DYNAMICS GUIDING TELEVISION COMMUNICATION FROM ITS ORIGINS TO THE PRESENT DAY, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE ITALIAN CASE, AND TO DESCRIBE THE EVOLUTIONARY PATHS OF TELEVISION IN RELATION TO TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION IN AUDIOVISUAL MEDIA AND THE GENERAL SYSTEM OF COMMUNICATION, WITH SPECIFIC REGARD TO THE ADVENT OF CONTEMPORARY DIGITAL MEDIA.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
KNOWLEDGE OF THE EXPRESSIVE AND CULTURAL DYNAMICS OF THE MEDIUM OF TELEVISION IN RELATION TO THE INNOVATION OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES. AUTONOMY IN DECODING AND INTERPRETING THE PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION PROCESSES OF CONTEMPORARY TELEVISION.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
ABILITY TO APPLY METHODOLOGIES OF ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF TELEVISION PRODUCTS AND PROGRAMMES, RECOGNISED IN THEIR HISTORICAL AND EXPRESSIVE DIFFERENCES; ABILITY TO LEARN THEORETICAL NOTIONS AND TO ELABORATE THEM THROUGH THE DESCRIPTION OF OBSERVED TELEVISION PROCESSES AND PRODUCTS, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE VARIATIONS INDUCED BY DIGITAL MEDIA INNOVATIONS.

MAKING JUDGMENTS:
THE STUDENT WILL DEVELOP CONCEPTUAL TOOLS AND CRITICAL SKILLS USEFUL FOR AUTONOMOUSLY EVALUATING THEORETICAL ISSUES AND LANGUAGES OF VARIOUS TYPES OF MEDIA.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE HIS OR HER KNOWLEDGE AT DIFFERENT LEVELS (BOTH TO AN AUDIENCE OF EXPERTS AND TO ONE OF NON-SPECIALISTS), EXPRESSING IT WITH LANGUAGE PROPERTY AND SPECIFIC LEXICAL SKILLS, AND USING THE MOST APPROPRIATE REGISTER FOR EACH CIRCUMSTANCE.

LEARNING SKILLS:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET COMPLEX TEXTS AND USE BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS, BOTH TRADITIONAL AND COMPUTER-BASED, TO IDENTIFY AND SELECT THE SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE USEFUL FOR THE ENHANCEMENT OF THEIR KNOWLEDGE.
Prerequisites
THE COURSE ASSUMES KNOWLEDGE OF BASIC ELEMENTS OF MEDIA HISTORY, CONTEMPORARY HISTORY AND SOCIOLOGY OF CULTURAL PROCESSES.
Contents
THE COURSE WILL FOCUS MAINLY ON THE HISTORY, EVOLUTION AND FORMS OF TELEVISION SERIALITY.
THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE COURSE WILL BE:
1) HISTORY OF TELEVISION SERIALITY FROM THE 1950S TO THE PRESENT;
2) INTRODUCTION AND CRITIQUE OF THE CONCEPT OF THE 'DIGITAL REVOLUTION';
3) ANALYSIS OF COMPLEX STORYTELLING IN CONTEMPORARY SERIALITY;
4) DISCUSSION ON IMAGINARIES, AUDIENCE AND MEDIA CULTURES IN THE TV SERIES "STRANGER THINGS".
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS CONDUCTED THROUGH THE FOLLOWING METHODOLOGIES: LECTURES, SEMINAR ACTIVITIES DEVOTED TO CASE STUDIES, DISCUSSION OF AUDIOVISUAL SEQUENCES.
ATTENDANCE AT LECTURES IS NOT OBLIGATORY, BUT STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
Verification of learning
THE ACQUISITION OF KNOWLEDGE WILL BE VERIFIED BY AN ORAL EXAMINATION AT THE END OF THE COURSE, WHICH WILL FOCUS ON THE COURSE CONTENT AND THE CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF CASE HISTORIES AND SEQUENCES FROM THE TV SERIES ANALYSED.
OPTIONALLY AND AT LEAST 15 DAYS BEFORE THE CHOSEN EXAM DATE, STUDENTS MAY AGREE TO PRESENT A TEXT ON A TV SERIES, WHICH WILL BE DISCUSSED DURING THE ORAL EXAM. THE PRESENTATION OF SUCH A TEXT DOES NOT ENTAIL ANY REDUCTION IN THE EXAMINATION PROGRAMME.
