Objectives
GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES:
THE COURSE AIMS TO DEVELOP THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL ANALYSIS SKILLS OF CULTURAL PROCESSES, IN PARTICULAR OF HOW THE FACTS OF CULTURE IN WESTERN COUNTRIES, IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY AND BEYOND, ARE ARRANGED IN AN AREA OF MEDIOLOGICAL CENTRALITY. AMONG THE MEDIA, THE COURSE INTENDS TO DEEPEN THE ROLE PLAYED BY CINEMA AND OTHER MEDIA (COMICS, FICTION, IN PARTICULAR) DURING THE TWENTIETH CENTURY AND IN THE CURRENT DIGITAL PHASE FOR THE PROMULGATION OF SOCIALLY STRUCTURED CULTURAL PROCESSES.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
KNOWLEDGE OF THE EVOLUTION OF AUDIOVISUAL MEDIA (CINEMA, FICTION, COMICS) IN RELATION TO OTHER MEDIA DURING THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND FOUNDATIONS AND EXPRESSIVE METHODS OF CLASSICAL AND MODERN AUDIOVISUAL COMMUNICATION.
THE STUDENT:
- WILL KNOW THE BASIC THEORETICAL CONCEPTS OF THE DISCIPLINE;
- WILL KNOW THE PRODUCTION METHODS WITH WHICH, FROM THE NINETEENTH TO THE TWENTIETH CENTURY AND BEYOND, IN THE TECHNOLOGICAL MEDIA (CINEMA, COMICS, TELEVISION FICTION, ETC.) A SERIES OF CULTURAL PROCESSES HAS GRADUALLY BEEN DEFINED IN RELATION TO ARTISTIC PRODUCTION, GENERATIONAL IDENTITIES, FORMS OF CONSUMPTION IN RELATION TO THOSE THAT DEFINE CULTURE AND DAILY LIFE;
- WILL EQUIP ITSELF WITH ANALYSIS TOOLS CAPABLE OF UNDERSTANDING THE PRODUCTION PROCESSES OF CULTURE IN RELATION TO TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION AND MEDIA CHANGES.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL HAVE ACQUIRED THE ABILITY TO APPLY METHODOLOGIES OF ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF AUDIOVISUALS BETWEEN DIFFERENT AND COMPARABLE MEDIA, AS WELL AS TO INDEPENDENTLY LEARN THEORETICAL NOTIONS AND TO ELABORATE THEM IN THE HYPOTHESIS OF A PRECISE AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE OBSERVED PROCESSES
THROUGH THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- IDENTIFY THE EXPRESSIVE MODES OF CULTURE PRODUCTION IN THE ERA OF ANALOGUE AND DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES;
- CONNECT EXPRESSIVE FORMS OF CINEMA AND AUDIOVISUAL MEDIA WITH CULTURAL EXPERIENCES ARRANGED DURING THE TWENTIETH CENTURY AND THE CONTEMPORARY ERA;
- UNDERSTAND THE VARIOUS EVOLUTIONARY PHASES OF CULTURAL PROCESSES IN RELATION TO THE SOCIO-CULTURAL CHANGES OF MEDIA AUDIENCES, WHICH OCCURRED IN THE MEDIUM AND LONG TERM.

MAKING JUDGMENTS:
THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE A THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK THAT WILL ALLOW HIM TO INDEPENDENTLY EVALUATE A VARIETY OF CULTURAL PHENOMENA FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE DYNAMICS OF COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE HIS KNOWLEDGE AT DIFFERENT LEVELS (BOTH TO AN AUDIENCE OF EXPERTS AND TO ONE OF NON-SPECIALISTS), EXPRESSING THEM WITH SPECIFIC LANGUAGE PROPERTIES AND LEXICAL SKILLS, AND USING THE MOST APPROPRIATE REGISTER FOR EACH CIRCUMSTANCE.

LEARNING SKILLS:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET COMPLEX TEXTS AND USE BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS, BOTH TRADITIONAL AND IT, TO IDENTIFY AND SELECT THE SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE USEFUL FOR INCREASING THEIR KNOWLEDGE.
Prerequisites
GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORY OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE, BASIC ELEMENTS OF THE HISTORY OF CINEMA, TV, COMIC STRIPS, ADVERTISING AND TELEVISION FICTION.

THE COURSE INTENDS TO ANALYZE THE COMPLEX RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CINEMA AND MODERNITY AND BETWEEN MASS CULTURE AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE MEDIA SYSTEM IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY (FROM CINEMA TO COMICS TO TV). WE WILL ANALYZE THE WAYS IN WHICH CINEMA, FROM THE ORIGINS OF THE MEDIUM TO TODAY, FROM THE ANALOGUE TO THE DIGITAL ERA, HAS RE-FORMULATED CULTURAL AND SOCIAL PROCESSES AND STRONGLY INTERTWINED THE NECESSITIES BETWEEN DAILY LIFE, HISTORICAL TIME AND HORIZONS OF CULTURE.
Teaching Methods
FRONTAL LESSONS, PROJECTION OF AUDIOVISUAL SEQUENCES, TEXTUAL AND SOCIO-CULTUROLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF FILMS, COMICS AND OTHER TYPES OF MEDIA PRODUCTION, SPECIFICALLY AUDIOVISUAL ONES.
Verification of learning
THE LEARNING CHECK CONSISTS OF AN ORAL EXAM. THE EXAMINATION QUESTIONS WILL AIM TO VERIFY THE ACQUISITION OF THE KNOWLEDGE AND METHODS OF THE DISCIPLINE IN RELATION TO THE TEXTS ANALYZED DURING THE COURSE AND THEIR CULTURAL CONTEXTS.
