Objectives
The teaching of the English language has as its main objective to offer students linguistic tools and communication strategies to be adopted in the academic field and useful for operating in an international context, especially in professional sectors connected with the sports field. Students must be able to connect the basic language knowledge already acquired with specific contents of immediate relevance for their studies, from educational sciences to medicine, from psychology to pedagogy. The language of sport is complex precisely because it has many connections with applied sciences and the linguistic registers vary from the jargon of football journalism to the formal registers of scientific texts.
The main objective of the course is to make students acquire language skills by working both on the rules of use of the language, i.e. communication functions, and on the acquisition of specific vocabulary used in the professional context. During the lessons, students will also have the opportunity to listen to songs and exercises in reading texts taken from specialized magazines.
At the end of the lessons the student must be able to:
1. read and understand texts in English on sports or sports related topics
2. use properly the grammatical structures / communicative functions and the vocabulary covered by the course.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of basic elements of the English language to be recovered and strengthened both at the level of correct use of grammatical structures and of communicative functions of the specialized lexicon.
Contents
Consistently with what has been said so far, the course program is divided into two strictly connected parts: the first introduces a series of concepts closely related to the profession, while the second explores more purely linguistic aspects.
