Objectives
THIS COURSE OFFERS AN INTRODUCTION TO BASIC NOTIONS OF MUSIC AND COMPUTER SCIENCE WITH THE GOAL OF MERGING COMPUTER SCIENCE TOPICS WITH MUSIC TOPICS TO SOLVE BASIC MUSIC RELATED PROBLEMS OR TO CREATE SIMPLE MUSIC RELATED TOOLS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THIS COURSE WILL PROVIDE THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE NECESSARY TO UNDERSTAND SOME SPECIFIC MUSIC RELATE PROBLEMS, IN PARTICULAR THOSE RELATED TO AUTOMATIC MUSIC COMPOSITION.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY THE TECHNIQUES STUDIED IN THE COURSE TO MUSIC RELATED PROBLEMS.
Prerequisites
THE BASIC NEEDED KNOWLEDGE IS THAT OF A PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE. MUSIC KNOWLEDGE IS HELPFUL BUT NOT MANDATORY AS THE COURSE WILL PROVIDE A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE NEEDED MUSIC NOTIONS.

THE FIRST PART OF THE COURSE WILL PRESENT A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC THEORY THAT WILL COVER ALL THE FUNDAMENTALS NEEDED TO UNDERSTAND THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE. IN THE SECOND PART OF THE COURSE SOME SPECIFIC TOPICS WILL BE PRESENTED. IN PARTICULAR SOME TECHNIQUES FOR REPRESENTING MUSIC WILL BE STUDIED. THE SPECIFIC MUSIC PROBLEMS THAT WILL BE STUDIED ARE RELATED TO AUTOMATIC MUSIC COMPOSITION, THE SYMMETRY IN MUSIC, THE SIMILARITY OF MUSIC. THE STUDY OF THESE TOPICS WILL HAVE AN INTRODUCTORY CHARACTER AND SIMPLE PROGRAMS FOR THE PRESENTED TOPICS WILL BE DEVELOPED.
A TENTATIVE PROGRAM FOR THE COURSE IS THE FOLLOWING:
-SOUNDS, NOTES, SCALES, WELL TEMPERAMENT (4 HOURS)
-BASIC MUSIC NOTIONS (4 HOURS)
-SYMMETRY AND MUSIC (2 HOURS)
-MUSIC REPRESENTATIONS, MIDI FORMAT (4 HOURS)
- SIMPLE TECHNIQUES FOR THE DETECTION OF MUSIC SIMILARITIES (8 HOURS)
-SIMPLE TECHNIQUES FOR AUTOMATIC MUSIC COMPOSITION (8 HOURS)

Verification of learning
DEVELOPMENT OF A SOFTWARE PROJECT, ORAL EXAMINATION. WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROJECT THE STUDENT MUST SHOW KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOOLS STUDIED DURING THE COURSE AND ABILITY IN USING SUCH TOOLS TO BUILD APPLICATIONS RELATED TO THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE. THE ORAL EXAMINATION HAS TO GOAL THE CHECK THE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE NOT INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT.
