Objectives
SKILLS IN RECOGNIZING AGRO-INDUSTRY BIOMASSES AS MATERIALS FOR HEALTH AND ENERGY CHAINS; ABILITY IN CHARACTERIZING ENERGY, HEALTH AND NUTRITIONAL VALUES OF BIOMASSES AND THEIR IMPACT ON THE POWER AND BIOFUEL PRODUCTION AS WELL AS ON NUTRACEUTIC, COSMETIC AND PHARMACEUTIC COMPANIES.
SPECIFIC COURSE OUTLINES:
AT THE END OF THE COURSE, STUDENT WILL BE EXPECTED TO HAVE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE OF
-THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND BIO-ECONOMY CONCEPT, USE OF AGRICULTURAL WASTES AND BY-PRODUCTS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ENERGY AND HEALTH PRODUCTS;
-THE MAIN PLANTS UTILIZABLE AS ENERGY AND BIOPRODUCTS SOURCE;
- THE PROCESSES OF ENERGY CONVERSION AND POWER GENERATION FROM PLANT WASTES.

THE STUDENTS APPLYING THE ACQUIRED SKILLS SHOULD BE ABLE:
TO VALORIZE BIOMASSES AND ORGANIC MATERIALS IN THE SUPPLY CHAINS OF THE FUELS AND HEALTH PRODUCTS ,
TO PRESENT AND DISCUSS IN A PROFESSIONAL CONTEXT.
Prerequisites
IT IS REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE ACQUISITION AND SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF "CHIMICA" (CHEMISTRY) YEAR I OF THE COURSE. ACHIEVEMENT OF "BOTANICA" (BOTANY) IS SUGGESTED TOO.

FOLLOWING A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE CONCEPT OF AGRICULTURAL WASTE AND AGRO-INDUSTRY BYPRODUCTS, CIRCULAR ECONOMY, BIO-ECONOMY, GREEN ECONOMY, THE LESSONS WILL FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:
1ST PART "PLANT BIOMASSES AND ENERGY":
- PLANTS SUCH AS STOCKS OF ENERGY AND BIOACTIVE SUBSTANCES;
- ENERGY CONVERSION PROCESSES: THERMOCHEMICAL CONVERSION (COMBUSTION, PYROLYSIS, GASIFICATION) FROM ANNUAL, SEMI-ANNUAL AND POLIANNUAL PLANTS;
- ENERGY CONVERSION PROCESSES:
BIOLOGICAL CONVERSION (FERMENTATION, DIGESTION) FOR BIOGAS AND BIO-ALCOHOL PRODUCTION;
- ENERGY CONVERSION PROCESSES:
PHYSICAL-CHEMICAL CONVERSION FOR BIO-OIL AND BIODIESEL PRODUCTION FROM DEDICATED AND INTEGRATIVE BIOMASSES;
FOR ALL SUBJECTS:
- MAIN NON-FOOD CROPS AND SUPPLEMENTAL BIOMASS IN ENERGY CONVERSION PROCESSES; ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND OPTIMIZATION, RECOVERY, RECYCLING AND REUSE OF MATERIALS;
- SIZING, OPTIMIZATION AND ECONOMICAL EVALUATION (PROFITABILITY) OF RESIDUAL PLANTS BIOMASSES;
2ND PART "PLANT BIOMASSES AND HEATH PRODUCTS":
- PLANTS AS A SOURCE OF NUTRIENTS (CAROTENOIDS, ORGANIC ACIDS, POLYPHENOLS, OLIGOSACCHARIDES, ETC.) WITH BENEFICIAL EFFECTS ON HEALTH THROUGH VARIOUS MECHANISMS OF ACTION, PROTECTION BY POLYUNSATURATED FATTY ACIDS;
- BIOMASS AND RESIDUES WITH HIGH CONTENT IN BIOACTIVE SUBSTANCES (NUTRACEUTICALS) AND / OR WITH STRONG HEALTH CHARACTERISTICS (REDUCED CONTENT OF ANTI-NUTRITIONAL FACTORS)
- RECOVERY AND ENHANCEMENT OF BIOMASSES (CITRUS SPP CROPS AND CITRUS INDUSTRY, NUTS, GRAPE AND POMACE, OLIVE AND WINE AGRO-INDUSTRY) BY MEANS OF SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTAL AND GREEN PROCESSES,
- TRANSFORMATION OF BIOMASS FROM WASTES AND BY-PRODUCTS INTO BIO-PRODUCTS FOR APPLICATION IN HEALTH (HERBAL, COSMETIC, DIETETIC), BIOMATERIAL AND TEXTILE FIELDS.

CLASSROOM EXERCISES ARE PROGRAMMED; STUDENTS WILL BE GUIDED IN THE ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT TERRITORIAL CONTEXTS RELATED TO
- IDENTIFICATION OF BIOMASS POTENTIALLY EXPLOITABLE AT THE APPLICATION LEVEL IN THE TERRITORIES;
- QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF BIOMASSES, AGRICULTURAL RESIDUES AND WASTES PRODUCED IN THE REGION;
- PROJECT PLANNING FOR THE PRODUCTION OF HEALTH PRODUCTS AND BIOENERGY.

- TUTORIALS ON SELECTED SUBJECTS AND CLASS EXERCISES (7 H)
COURSE ATTENDANCE IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED
Verification of learning
STUDENTS HAVE TO DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY HAVE ACHIEVED THE LEARNING OUTCOME(S) AND MUST PROVIDE FEEDBACK THAT IDENTIFIES THEIR PROGRESS THROUGH INTERMEDIATE TESTS ( AT LEAST A WRITTEN REPORT AND A TEST WITH OPEND AND/OR MULTIPLE CHOISE ANSWERS ON SELECTED TOPICS).
FINAL ORAL ASSESSMENT (ABOUT 10-20 MIN) HAS THE AIM TO EVALUATE THE COURSE OUTCOMES IN RELATION TO THE RESULTS OF THE INTERMEDIATE TEST/REPORTS.
