New evidence on the effect of immigration restrictions on intergenerational cultural transmission

Simone Manzavino (Università di Salerno), Giuseppe Russo (Università di Salerno), Fausto Galli (Università di Salerno)

Abstract:

Restricting immigration forces to settle abroad many individuals who would otherwise prefer circular or return migration because of a high attachment to their origin culture. These individuals tend to convey their cultural values to their children. Consequently, restrictive immigration policies could bring about a lower cultural integration of the second generations. We exploit the 1973 immigration ban in West Germany (Anwebestopp) as a natural experiment to test this hypothesis through a diff-in-diff analysis. Our results show that second generations from parents treated by the Anwebestopp show a higher level of religiosity. This confirms that immigration policies have very far-reaching consequences.
