Objectives | |

THE COURSE WILL PROVIDE THE CRITICAL TOOLS BY WHICH THE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO STUDY THE LINGUISTIC, EXEGETICAL AND/OR METRICAL ASPECTS OF A GREEK MEDIEVAL WORK, IN ITS HISTORICAL AND LITERARY CONTEXT. THE ABILITIES TO BE ACQUIRED ARE THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE GREEK MEDIEVAL LANGUAGE (IN THE ‘LEARNED’ REGISTER, THE SO-CALLED HOCHSPRACHE), THE ANALYSIS OF A BYZANTINE TEXT'S MANUSCRIPT TRADITION AND OF ITS EDITING TECHNIQUE. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO: -ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE IN ORDER TO CRITICALLY EVALUATE THE LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY ASPECT OF VERSE AND PROSE TEXTS FROM LATE ANTIQUITY AND THE GREEK MIDDLE AGES (FROM THE 4TH TO THE 15TH CENTURY), ANALYSING THEM IN THE WIDER CONTEXT OF PRODUCTION AND USE; -ANALYSE THE MORPHO-SYNTACTIC PHENOMENA OF THE MEDIEVAL GREEK LANGUAGE IN ITS ‘LEARNED’ REGISTER (HOCHSPRACHE) AND IN THE MIDDLE ONE; -REFINE THE TECHNIQUES OF INTERPRETATION OF THE TEXT, THE ANALYSIS OF RHETORICAL FIGURES AND THE METRICS OF BYZANTINE POETIC TEXTS COMPOSED IN THE LEARNED LANGUAGE; -EVALUATE THE PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE TRANSMISSION OF A BYZANTINE LITERARY TEXT, AS WELL AS TO ITS CRITICAL EDITION; -USE THE MOST RECENT PAPER AND DIGITAL SUPPORTS FOR THE STUDY OF THE GREEK LANGUAGE AND BYZANTINE POETRY: ICB/SUPPL., TLG ONLINE, LBG ONLINE, DBBE. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: -CRITICALLY DEAL WITH READING, UNDERSTANDING, TRANSLATION AND CONTEXTUALISATION OF VERSE AND PROSE TEXTS OF BYZANTINE LITERATURE; -DEEPEN THE STUDY OF LITERARY GENRES, OF THE FIGURES OF BYZANTINE WRITERS, OF BYZANTINE CULTURE AND HISTORY, OF ACCENTUAL METRICS; -COMPLETE THE EDUCATIONAL COURSE FOR ACCESS TO THE LISTS OF STATE TEACHERS OF CLASSICAL LANGUAGES IN UPPER SECONDARY SCHOOL, BY ACQUIRING FURTHER KNOWLEDGE ON THE TRANSMISSION AND CONSERVATION OF ANCIENT GREEK CULTURE; -CONSCIOUSLY USE DIGITAL RESOURCES FOR THE STUDY OF BYZANTINE DISCIPLINES. MAKING JUDGEMENTS STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: -DEAL WITH PHILOLOGICAL, LITERARY AND HISTORICAL-INTERPRETATIVE ISSUES AND PROBLEMS, EVEN OF AN INTERDISCIPLINARY NATURE, INDEPENDENTLY; DEMONSTRATE AN ATTITUDE THAT IS NOT PASSIVE, BUT RATHER ACTIVE AND POSSIBLY INNOVATIVE, THANKS TO THE RETRIEVAL OF NEW INFORMATION, OR THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW VIEWS; -SELF-REFLECTION ON THEIR WORK AND RELATED METHODOLOGIES, AS WELL AS ON THE "PUBLIC" EFFECTS OF THEIR ANALYSIS AND JUDGMENT TOOLS. COMMUNICATION SKILLS STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: -LEARN THE METHODS AND TECHNIQUES OF COMMUNICATION, IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO EXPOSE AND TRANSMIT THEIR KNOWLEDGE, WITH OBVIOUS APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE, AND IN A WAY NOT ONLY CLEAR AND UNDERSTANDABLE, BUT ALSO ARTICULATED ON DIFFERENT LEVELS OF LISTENING/DIALOGUE; -COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY WITH AN ADVANCED LEVEL AND WITH AN APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE TO INTERLOCUTORS OF DIFFERENT TYPES. LEARNING SKILLS STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: -CONTINUE TO STUDY INDEPENDENTLY AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE, BOTH IN THE 2ND LEVEL MASTER AND IN THE PHD PROGRAMS, AS WELL AS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE WORK ACTIVITIES. |

A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF CLASSICAL GREEK LANGUAGE, LITERATURE AND METRICS IS REQUIRED. STUDENTS, WHO DO NOT HAVE SUCH A COMPETENCE, ARE KINDLY REQUESTED TO ATTEND AN ELEMENTARY GREEK COURSE, ACTIVATED BY THE DEPARTMENT. |
