Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO OFFER AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF THE DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF LATIN LITERATURE, THROUGH THE ANALYSIS OF THE WORK OF A SINGLE AUTHOR OR A SPECIFIC LITERARY GENRE AND ITS HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT
- WILL KNOW THE SPECIFIC FEATURES OF A SINGLE LATIN LITERARY GENRE;
- UNDERSTAND THE DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF THE LANGUAGE AND STYLE OF A SINGLE LATIN AUTHOR.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO
- TRANSLATE A SUBSTANTIAL NUMBER OF TEXTS BY THE SAME AUTHOR OR IN THE SAME LITERARY GENRE;
- CRITICALLY ANALYSE AN ENTIRE LATIN WORK OR A SUBSTANTIAL PART OF IT;
- ILLUSTRATE THE STYLISTIC EVOLUTION OF THE SAME AUTHOR;
- TO INTERPRET CRITICALLY SPECIFIC ASPECTS OF THE LITERARY CIVILISATION OF ANCIENT ROME THROUGH THE STUDY OF A SINGLE AUTHOR OR A SINGLE LITERARY GENRE.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- CONSCIOUSLY EVALUATE A LITERARY TEXT;
- EASILY DISCERN ALL THE CONSTITUENT ELEMENTS OF A LITERARY TEXT;
- SELECT THE PHENOMENA AND SALIENT ASPECTS OF A LITERARY CIVILISATION IN ITS HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT AND CULTURAL CONTEXT, WITH SPECIAL REGARD TO A SINGLE AUTHOR OR LITERARY GENRE.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO
- EXPRESS THEMSELVES IN ITALIAN WITH INCREASING AWARENESS;
- REPRESENT AND COMMUNICATE, BY MEANS OF TEXTS OR VIRTUAL TOOLS, THE RESULTS OF THEIR OWN RESEARCH OR ELABORATIONS.
- HOLD CONVERSATIONS ON TOPICS RELATED TO LATIN LITERATURE, USING APPROPRIATE CRITICAL TERMINOLOGY.

LEARNING SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO
- USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS AND ALL THE VARIOUS TYPES OF COMPUTER RESOURCES AVAILABLE;
- CARRY OUT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET COMPLEX LITERARY TEXTS.
- CONTINUOUSLY UPDATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE, USING TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE.
Prerequisites
A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN NOTIONS OF LATIN PROSODY, METRICS, PHONETICS, MORPHOLOGY AND SYNTAX, AS WELL AS ADVANCED NOTIONS OF ROMAN HISTORY.
Contents
1) STRATEGIES OF THE COMMENTARY ON LATIN LITERARY TEXTS: FOR A THEORY OF THE APPROACH TO LATIN TEXTS.
2) A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF OVIDIUS' LAST ELEGIAC PRODUCTION.

Teaching Methods
AFTER A FEW INTRODUCTORY METHODOLOGICAL LESSONS, WE WILL MOVE ON TO THE READING AND EXAMINATION OF OVID'S EPISTULAE ES PONTO, THROUGH AN ALTERNATION OF LESSONS AND WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES.
Verification of learning
DURING THE LESSONS, STUDENTS WILL BE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE ACTIVELY AND WILL OFTEN BE ASKED AND SUGGESTED FOR IN-DEPTH STUDY OF INDIVIDUAL ASPECTS OF THE TOPICS COVERED, ON THE BASIS OF BIBLIOGRAPHICAL SUPPLEMENTS IN LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ITALIAN. THE FINAL ORAL EXAMINATION WILL FOCUS ON THE COURSE CONTENT AND ON THE TEXTS LISTED IN THE "TEXTS" SECTION.
DURING THE EXAMINATION, BOTH FOR THOSE ATTENDING AND THOSE NOT ATTENDING, THE FOLLOWING WILL BE ASSESSED:
1. CORRECTNESS AND ACCURACY OF CONTENT AND INFORMATION;
2. ABILITY TO ANSWER QUESTIONS WITH RELEVANCE AND PRECISION;
3. ABILITY TO EXPRESS ONESELF WITH CLARITY, PRECISION OF TERMINOLOGY AND OWNERSHIP OF LANGUAGE;
4. ABILITY TO ARTICULATE COMPLEX DISCOURSES IN A COHERENT MANNER;
5. ABILITY TO PLACE THE LITERARY TEXTS STUDIED IN A WIDER HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT.
6. ABILITY TO SUMMARIZE.
