Objectives
I. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE OF THE WESTERN HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHICAL, SCIENTIFIC AND THEOLOGICAL THOUGHT; ABILITY TO APPROACH THE PECULIAR WAYS OF THINKING IN MEDIEVAL TIME, TO ANALYSE AND REFLECT CRITICALLY AND CONTEXTUALLY THE THEORETICAL PRODUCTS, THE METHODOLOGY AND THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF PHILOSOPHICAL MEDIEVAL LITERATURE. II. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE PARTICULAR VALUE OF THE PHILOSOPHICAL MEDIEVAL PARADIGM; ABILITY TO ACHIEVE A CRITICAL HERMENEUTIC APPROACH TO THE MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHICAL TEXT, NOT ONLY IN TRANSLATION BUT ALSO IN THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE, AND TO THE SECONDARY SOURCES.

Contents
Part A:
THE COURSE WILL START WITH A BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE FIRST CHRISTIAN SPECULATION, FROM JUSTIN TO AUGUSTINE. THE COURSE WILL ANALYZE: THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES (SECC. V-XII), OR DEVELOPMENT OF THE PLATONIC-AUGUSTINIAN PARADIGM, THE AGE OF SCHOLASTICISM (XIII-XIV).

Part B:
MASTERING THE LEARNING AND INQUIRING TOOLS THAT ARE USEFUL IN THE STUDY OF HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY IN THE MIDDLE AGES.
COURSE DESCRIPTION (2016-2017): MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY AS “VERA PHILOSOPHIA”: A MODEL OF THOUGHT.
Teaching Methods
FRONTAL LESSONS. LECTURES ON MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHICAL LITERATURE AND RELATING DOCUMENTS, WITH GUIDED INTERPRETATION OF TEXTS. DISCUSSIONS ABOUT THE HISTORICAL GROUND, THE THEORETICAL IMPLICATIONS AND THE ACTUALITY OF THE CONCERNED QUESTIONS. REGULAR AND ACTIVE PARTICIPATION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. NOT ATTENDING STUDENTS SHOULD AGREE UPON EXAM-PROGRAM DIRECTLY WITH THE TEACHER.

THE ORAL EXAMINATION WILL BE DIRECTED TO ASCERTAIN THAT THE STUDENT HAS ACQUIRED: ABILITY TO APPRECIATE THE EPISTEMOLOGICAL REQUIREMENTS OF MEDIEVAL THOUGHT IN ITS HISTORICAL GROUND, INVOLVING THE USE OF CLASSICAL AND CONTEMPORARY SOURCES AND ADVANCED SECONDARY LITERATURE; ABILITY TO COMMENT ON THE MAIN THEMES OF THE DISCIPLINE, TO DEVISE AND SUSTAIN ARGUMENTS AND TO SOLVE PROBLEMS IN THE FIELD OF MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY; ABILITY TO GATHER AND INTERPRET RELEVANT DATA IN ORDER TO INFORM JUDGEMENTS THAT INCLUDE KNOWLEDGE AND REFLECTION ON RELEVANT PHILOSOPHICAL ISSUES DURING THE MEDIEVAL AGE.
