The Anna Lindh Chair of Euro-Mediterranean Studies was activated in 2008 as part of a cooperation agreement between the Didactic Council of Political Sciences and the “Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for Dialogue between Cultures", based in Alessandria of Egypt, with the aim of promoting the knowledge of the Mediterranean countries and of developing cultural and scientific relations. In particular, the Chair intends to provide theoretical and practical knowledge of the Mediterranean countries, dealing with their historical-geographical-cultural specificities and the political-legal and socio-economic aspects. Special attention is paid to the relationships between the different countries and to the relations between the two shores of the Mediterranean, including the partnership policies of the European Union. The seminars are held by different teachers according to the required disciplinary skills. The teaching is aimed at providing knowledge about fundamental issues concerning history and institutions, geography and environment, culture and society, religion and law, economics and politics and more specific skills on specialized subjects such as international relations and organizations, geopolitics and geoeconomics, transition processes and movements of democratization, media and communication, population and migratory flows, all always through a concrete focus on the Euro-Mediterranean area. |

Long gone are the days when the European Union set itself a foreign policy ambition for the entire Mediterranean Basin, as in the November 1995 Barcelona Conference. Since then, the September 11, 2001 attacks, the Lisbon Treaty and the Arab Revolutions have gone by and have drastically changed Europe’s policy outlook in the region. This multiplication of conflicts and tensions was matched only recently by a rise in the EU’s diplomatic involvement and, for wider motives, by a debate on increased military and border/coast guard capabilities. In addition, major developments have occurred in the area – such as migration, refugees and human trafficking – while actors such as Russia, the US and Turkey have also drastically reset their posture in recent years and months. The changing dynamics in the Mediterranean region and among key actors in the region required changes in EU policies and methods, in particular on the diplomatic front, especially through the High Representative and the European External Action Service. Thanks to the involvement of teachers and of experts of different disciplines and competences, the Course will analyze how developments in the Mediterranean area are influencing (or should influence) EU policies, such as the EU migration and asylum policy; the EU energetic policy, the EU cooperation and development policy, and the EU security policy. |
