Objectives
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES AND COMPETENCE TO ACQUIRE:
THE TEACHING UNIT HAS AS GENERAL EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF EARTH SCIENCES WHICH, ON THE BASIS OF THE REGULATIONS IN FORCE, THE STUDENTS OF THE ITALIAN ENGINEERING BACHELOR DEGREE OF ARE NECESSARY AND THEN TO THOSE OF THE MASTER'S DEGREE
FOR BETTER UNDERSTANDING THE PHYSICAL CONTEXT OF REFERENCE FOR THE PLANNING, PROGRAMMING AND DESIGN OF ENGINEERING WORKS AND DESIGN AT SITE AND WIDE AREA SCALE.
IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THESE OBJECTIVES, THE TEACHING UNIT IS STRUCTURED IN TWO PROGRESSIVELY INTEGRATED PARTS: GEOLOGY/GEOPHYSICAL AND GEOMORPHOLOGY.
THE FIRST PROVIDES THE BASIC ELEMENTS TO UNDERSTANDING THE GEOLOGICAL CONSTITUTION OF THE UNDERGROUND (GEOLOGICAL MODEL, AS REQUIRED BY THE TECHNICAL STANDARD),WHILE THE SECOND ONE, BASED ON OF THE PREVIOUS ONE, PROVIDES THE BASIC ELEMENTS TO UNDERSTAND THE CONFORMATION OF THE LANDFORMS OF THE TERRESTRIAL LANDSCAPE AND THE PROCESSES RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR MODELING OVER TIME (SIGNIFICANT GEOMORPHOLOGICAL AREA, AS REQUIRED BY THE STANDARD).
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
KNOWLEDGE OF THE TERMINOLOGY AND TECHNIQUES USED IN THE MAIN EARTH SCIENCES DISCIPLINES: GEOLOGY, GEOPHYSICS AND GEOMORPHOLOGY AND ABILITY TO RECOGNIZING THE MATERIALS (MINERALS, ROCKS AND SEDIMENTS) CONSTITUTING THE SOIL AND SUBSOIL, DEFINING THEYR DISTRIBUTION AND THE DISPOSITION ABOVE THE GROUND AND BY USING REPORTS, AND MAPPING AND OTHER TOOLS AS SURVEYED BY SIMPLE FIELD EXPERIENCES.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE TEACHING UNIT WILL HAVE TO PROVIDE THE ABILITY TO IMPROVE THE GEOLOGICAL MODEL OF THE UNDERGROUND BT BOREHOLES AND SURVEYS AND TO READ THE LANDSCAPE ON EXISTING GEOLOGICAL AND GEOMORPHOLOGICAL MAPS AND ON IMAGE, WITH REFERENCE TO REAL PHYSICAL CONTEXT, IN TERMS OF GEOMORPHYC PROCESSES-MATERIALS-LANDFORMS.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT
STUDENTS HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO APPLY THE MOST APPROPRIATE METHODS TO ILLUSTRATE THE GEOLOGICA INFORMATIONS IN THE FORM OF TEXTUAL, GRAPHICS AND MAPPING THE
BASIC ELEMENTS DERIVED BY THE TERRESTRIAL SURVEY (TOPOGRAPHIC PROFILES AND GEOLOGICAL CROSS-SECTIONS), RELATING THEM TO THE FACTORS OF
GEOLOGICAL AND CLIMATIC CONTROL AND RECOGNIZE THE DOMINANT GEOMORPHIC PROCESSES (TECTONIC, VOLCANIC, EROSIVIONAL, GRAVITATIONAL, DEPOSITIONAL).
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
TO KNOW HOW TO WORK IN A TEAM IN ORDER TO REALIZE SHARE GRAPHICS, CARTOGRAPHICS AND ILLUSTRATIVE NOTES AND ORALLY EXPOSE ANY
TOPIC RELATED TO GEOLOGY AND GEOMORPHOLOGY IN THE PERSPECTIVE OF ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS.
ABILITY TO LEARN TO KNOW HOW TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED TO LANDSCAPE CONTEXTS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE, AND DEEPEN THE TOPICS COVERED USING MATERIALS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE PROPOSED.

TEACHING METHOD
THE UNIT OF GEOLOGY AND GEOMORPHOLOGY IS STRUCTURED AS FOLLOWING:
- LESSONS IN CLASS WITH SLIDE PRESENTATIONS AND SCHEMES AT THE TRADITIONAL AND DIGITAL BLACKBOARD (40 HOURS, 4CFU);
- LABORATORY FOR THE RECOGNITION OF MINERALS AND ROCKS, READING OF TOPOGRAPHICAL AND GEOLOGICAL MAPS, DRAFTING OF TOPOGRAPHICAL PROFILES AND GEOLOGICAL CROSS-SECTIONS, DELIMITATION OF WATER BASINS, RECOGNITION OF BASIC GEOMORPHOLOGICAL FORMS (20 HOURS).
- GEOLOGICAL AND GEOMORPHOLOGICAL FIELD TRIP IN THE FISCIANO CAMPUS (10 EXTRA HOURS), WITH COLLECTION, RECOGNITION AND CATALOGING OF ROCKS AND SEDIMENTS AND REPRODUCTION OF SIMPLE STRATIGRAPHIC IN FIELD PROFILES.
AT LEAST 75% OF ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED,
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAM WITH EVALUATION IN THIRTHIEYHS.
THE VERIFICATION OF LEARNING WILL BE CARRIED OUT THROUGH AN ORAL AND A PRACTICAL PART.
THE ORAL PART WILL INCLUDE THE VERIFICATION OF THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS AND THEIR APPLICATION ON IMAGES, TOPOGRAPHIC AND GEOLOGICAL MAPS;
THE PRACTICAL PART IS AIMED TO RECOGNIZE THE MAIN ROCKS AND SEDIMENTS, TO DRAW UP SIMPLE TOPOGRAPHIC AND STRATIGRAPHIC PROFILES, BY DELIMITATION OF WATER BASINS AND DRAINAGE NETWORK AND LANDFORMS OF THE RELIEF CHARACTERISTICS OF THE APPENNINE LANDSCAPE.
UPON COMPLETION OF THE ORAL / PRACTICAL TESTS, THERE WILL BE A DISCUSSION LASTING ABOUT 15 MINUTES ON THE ELABORATION PRODUCED BY THE STUDENT INDEPENDENTLY OR IN TEAMS ON A CASE STUDY PROPOSED BY THE TEACHER. THE DISCUSSION WILL ADDRESS THE PROBLEMS POSED BY THE ASSIGNED CASE, THE POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVES OF ANALYSIS, THE POSSIBLE REGULATORY CONTEXT, THE METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH ADOPTED, THE ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTS OBTAINED. THE DISCUSSION CAN MAKE USE OF PAPERS OR IMAGES OR MATERIAL COLLECTED IN THE FIELD AND FORESEE THE REQUEST FOR THEORETICAL INSIGHTS AND DETAILED EXPLANATIONS BY THE MEMBERS OF THE EXAMINATION COMMISSION.
THE TWO TESTS MUST FIRST ALLOW TO ASCERTAIN THE ABILITY TO KNOW AND UNDERSTAND AT LEAST AT A MINIMUM LEVEL OF SUFFICIENCY, AS WELL AS THE ABILITY TO CLEARLY PRESENT THE ARGUMENTS IN ORAL AND WRITTEN FORM; SUBSEQUENTLY, THE STUDENT WILL HAVE TO DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE SKILLS ACQUIRED ON REAL CASES. FINALLY, THE EVALUATION WITH HONORS WILL BE AWARDED IF THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES THE ABILITY TO DEVELOP AND APPLY SOLUTIONS IN INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT ON DIFFERENT STUDY CASES.
