Objectives
EDUCATIONAL GOALS: THE COURSE DEALS WITH TOPOLOGIES, CONTROL TECHNIQUES AND DESIGN METHODS OF NON ISOLATED DC-DC VOLTAGE AND CURRENT SWITCHING REGULATORS FOR ICT, INDUSTRIAL AND RENEWABLE ENERGIES APPLICATIONS. THE STUDENTS LEARN HOW TO DESIGN LOW POWER SWITCHING REGULATORS ACCORDING TO THE SPECIFICATIONS.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF TOPOLOGY AND CONTROL TECHNIQUE ON STATIC AND DYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS AND PERFORMANCES OF DC-DC SWITCHING REGULATORS; UNDERSTANDING FIGURES OF MERIT FOR THE EVALUATION OF SWITCCHING REGULATORS PERFORMANCES.
APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: ABILITY TO IDENTIFY AND UNDERSTAND THE CORRELATION AMONG THE APPLICATION SPECIFICATIONS OF A POWER SUPPLY, ITS DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS AND ITS PERFORMANCES; ABILITY TO DEVELOP AND APPLY ANALYTICAL MODELS AND NUMERIC AND SYMBOLYC COMPUTATION TOOLS FOR DESIGN AND OPTIMIZATION OF SWITCHING POWER SUPPLIES.
PERSONAL JUDGMENTS: ABILITY TO SELECT AND APPLY THE MOST APPROPRIATE DESIGN SOLUTION, AND RELEVANT MODELS AND DESIGN METHODS, FOR OPTIMAL DESIGN OF SWITCHING POWER SUPPLIES BASED ON THE APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: ABILITY TO TEAM WORK AND TO INTERACTIONS WITH POWER DESIGN EXPERTS ON DESIGN ISSUES OF MEDIUM-HIGH LEVEL OF COMPLEXITY RELEVANT TO POWER ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS DESIGN.
LEARNING SKILLS: ABILITY TO APPLY AND EXTEND THE KNOWLEDGE ON POWER ELECTRONICS BEYOND THE SPECIFIC APPLICATION CONTEXT OF THE COURSE; ABILITY TO INSIGHT POWER SUPPLIES DESIGN ISSUES BY RETRIEVING AND USING APPROPRIATE KNOWLEDGE SOURCES
Prerequisites
MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS, CIRCUIT THEORY, FUNDAMENTALS OF CONTROL, ANALOG ELECTRONICS, POWER SEMICONDUCTOR DEVICES
Contents
- POWER AND REGULATION DEMANDS IN ICT, INDUSTRIAL, LED LIGHTING, AUTOMOTIVE AND RENEWABLE SOURCES APPLICATIONS (HOURS 4: 4/0/0).
- NON-ISOLATED DC-DC REGULATORS: POWER SUPPLIES ARCHITECTURES, PHYSICAL AND FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POWER CHAIN AND CONTROL CHAIN ELEMENTS, POWER CONVERSION TOPOLOGIES, MODELS AND METHODS FOR STATIC AND DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF THE POWER STAGE OF DC-DC REGULATORS (HOURS 20: 10/6/4)
- POWER SUPPLY POWER STAGE DESIGN: PHYSICAL AND BEHAVIORAL MODELS FOR STRESS AND LOSS ANALYSIS OF POWER MOSFETS, DRIVERS, MAXIMIZATION OF SWITCHING FREQUENCY. TYPES, CHARACTERISTICS, LOSSES OF POWER PASSIVE COMPONENTS, PARTS SELECTION AND MINIMIZATION OF THE FILTER STAGE IN POWER SUPPLIES. DESIGN OF POWER STAGE FOR HIGH POWER DENSITY POWER SUPPLIES (HOURS 20: 10/6/4).
- CONTROL TECHNIQUES AND RELEVANT DESIGN METHODS: HYSTERETIC, CONSTANT ON TIME, VOLTAGE-MODE, CURRENT MODE, DIGITAL, MPPT AND THEIR APPLICATION TO POL, LED DRIVER, AUTOMOTIVE AND PHOFOTOVOLTAIC REGULATORS. (HOURS 36: 18/10/8).
- CURRENT LIMITING TECHNIQUES, EMI ISSUES AND PCB LAYOUT DESIGN (HOURS 10: 6/2/2)
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES THEORETICAL LESSONS, CLASSROOM EXERCISES AND LABORATORY ACTIVITIES. IN THE CLASSROOM EXERCISES THE STUDENTS ARE ENGAGED IN COMPUTATIONS RELEVANT TO A POWER SUPPLY DESIGN TO BE DEVELOPED OVER THE COURSE DEVELOPMENT. IN THE LABORATORY ACTIVITIES THE STUDENTS WORK ON INDUSTRY STANDARD BOARD PROTOTYPES TO MAKE STATIC AND DYNAMIC TESTS AND TO VERIFY THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THEIR DESIGN CHOICES
Verification of learning
THE GOAL OF THE EXAM IS TO ASSESS THE STUDENT'S GLOBAL KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF CONCEPTS DISCUSSED IN THE COURSE, THE ABILITY TO APPLY SUCH KNOWLEDGE IN THE DESIGN OF POWER SUPPLIES, THE JUDGMENT AUTONOMY, THE COMMUNICATION ABILITY AND THE LEARNING ABILITY.
THE EXAM CONSIST OF A DESIGN REPORT AND OF AN ORAL DISCUSSION. THE DESIGN REPORT CONCERNS DESIGN ISSUES RELEVANT TO A POWER SUPPLY - SUCH AS THE SELECTION AND DESIGN OF POWER STAGE AND CONTROLLER SUITABLE FOR THE ACHIEVEMENT OF STATIC AND DYNAMIC PERFORMANCES REQUIRED BY THE APPLICATION - AND INCLUDES THE DESCRIPTION OF THE DEAIGN GOALS, THE APPROACH ADOPTED, THE RESULTS ACHIEVED AND THEIR CRITICAL DISCUSSION. THE DESIGN REPORT IS EVALUATED BASED ON THE CORRECTNESS OF THE DESIGN APPROACH AND QUALITY OF RESULTS ACHIEVED. THE GOAL OF THE ORAL DISCUSSION IS TO ASSESS THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO PRESENT AND DISCUSS THE REPORT CONTENTS, THE DESIGN CHOICES, AND THE OVERALL KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE. IN THE FINAL GRADE OF THE EXAM, EXPRESSED IN THE NUMERIC SCALE FROM 18 (WORST) TO 30 (BEST), THE REPORT EVALUATION AND THE ORAL DISCUSSION ARE EQUALLY WAIGHTED.
