Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS IN THE MASTER'S DEGREE COURSE IN MANAGEMENT ENGINEERING WITH THE FUNDAMENTAL ELEMENTS FOR ANALYSIS IN OPERATION AND ALSO REMOTE MONITORING OF INDUSTRIAL PLANTS BY MEANS OF EXPERIMENTAL AND DYNAMIC MACHINERY METHODS. THE PROGRAM IS COMPOSED OF LESSONS AND EXERCISES THAT AIMING JOINTLY TO CHARACTERIZE THE DYNAMIC BEHAVIOR OF MACHINES AND PLANTS FOR THE SUBSEQUENT ANALYSIS OF POSSIBLE MALFUNCTIONS.
Prerequisites
INHERENT KNOWLEDGE AND CHARACTERIZING THE PROFILE OF THE GRADUATE IN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING ARE REQUIRED.
Contents
THE MAIN TOPICS COVERED DURING THE COURSE ARE THE FOLLOWING:
MACHINES AND MECHANISMS (5 LECTURE HOURS; 0 PRACTICE HOURS): TERMINOLOGY AND CHARACTERISTICS; KINEMATIC COUPLES; DEGREES OF FREEDOM; MOTION TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS; MECHANICAL PERFORMANCE; MACHINES AND MECHANISMS ARRANGED IN SERIES AND IN PARALLEL; IRREVERSIBLE MECHANISMS.
PRINCIPLES OF APPLIED DYNAMICS (5 LECTURE HOURS; 5 PRACTICE HOURS): REFERENCES OF RIGID BODY DYNAMICS; CARDINAL EQUATIONS IN MATRICIAL FORM; ENERGY CONSERVATION THEOREM (BALANCE OF POWER); LAGRANGE EQUATIONS; STATIC AND DYNAMIC UNBALANCE OF A ROTOR; CRITICAL SPEEDS OF FLEXIBLE ROTORS ON RIGID AND ELASTIC SUPPORTS; REVERSE WHIRLING.
MACHINE ELEMENTS (3 LECTURE HOURS; 2 PRACTICE HOURS): MOTION TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS: GEAR AND BELT TRANSMISSIONS; CAM MECHANISMS; PLAIN, ROLLING, AND HYDRODYNAMIC BEARINGS; BRAKES AND CLUTCHES.
DYNAMICS OF A MACHINE (10 LECTURE HOURS; 5 PRACTICE HOURS): GENERAL SCHEME OF A MACHINE; MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ENGINE AND OF THE OPERATING MACHINE; MACHINE REGULATION AND STABILITY; THE TRANSMISSION; DIRECT AND RETROGRADE MOTION; DYNAMICS OF THE MACHINE AT STEADY STATE AND IN VARIOUS MOTION, THE MACHINE AT PERIODIC REGIME, DYNAMICS OF THE ALTERNATIVE MACHINE; BALANCING OF INERTIA FORCES; SIZING OF A FLYWHEEL.
MECHANICAL VIBRATIONS (7 LECTURE HOURS; 3 PRACTICE HOURS): DYNAMICS OF VIBRATING SYSTEMS WITH ONE AND MORE DEGREES OF FREEDOM; STATE SPACE EQUATIONS OF MOTION; FREE VIBRATIONS, FORCED VIBRATIONS, DYNAMIC AMPLIFICATION COEFFICIENT, VIBRATION ISOLATION BY FOUNDATION; DYNAMIC ABSORBER; EIGENVALUES AND EIGENVECTORS; MODAL APPROACH.
VIBRATION ANALYSIS AND DIAGNOSTICS (10 LECTURE HOURS; 5 PRACTICE HOURS): HARMONIC ANALYSIS OF SIGNALS, DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUES FOR ROLLING AND SLIDING BEARINGS, FOR ROTOR UNBALANCE, DIAGNOSTIC ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES USING VIBRATIONAL ANALYSIS; DEFECTS OBTAINABLE BY STUDYING THE FREQUENCY SPECTRUM; STRUCTURAL MISALIGNMENTS AND MECHANICAL LOOSENING; NOTES ON THE REFERENCE STANDARD ISO-10816-3; MEASUREMENT AND MONITORING TOOLS.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO LECTURES (40 HOURS), CLASS EXERCISES (17 HOURS), AND LABORATORY EXERCISES (3 HOURS). THE LECTURES WILL ALLOW STUDENTS TO ADDRESS BOTH FROM A THEORETICAL POINT OF VIEW AND AN APPLICATION POINT OF VIEW PROBLEMS RELATED TO DIAGNOSTICS AND PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE IN INDUSTRIAL PLANTS, ALSO USING CALCULATION SOFTWARE. IN PARTICULAR, VARIOUS EXERCISES WILL BE PROPOSED FOR EACH TOPIC, THE SOLUTION OF WHICH IS PARTLY ADDRESSED IN CLASS AND PARTLY LEFT TO THE STUDENT AS A SELF-CHECK TOOL.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL TEST. IN THE 2-HOUR WRITTEN TEST, THE STUDENT WILL BE SUBJECT TO THE SOLUTION OF TWO EXERCISES AIMED AT VERIFYING THE ABILITY TO ANALYZE AND SYNTHESIZE THE DYNAMIC BEHAVIOR OF MACHINES AND SYSTEMS. THE ORAL TEST WITH A DURATION OF ABOUT 30 MINUTES IS AIMED AT VERIFYING THE ABILITY OF APPLICATION OF THE METHODS FOR DIAGNOSTICS REMOTE MONITORING OF MACHINES FOR PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE APPLICATIONS.
