Objectives | |

THE COURSE IS AIMED TO PROVIDE BASIC CONCEPTS ON STRUCTURE, MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR AND PROPERTIES, EVEN AFTER HEAT TREATMENT, OF METAL ALLOYS USED FOR STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS IN THE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY. THE STUDENTS ARE GUIDED TO UNDERSTAND THE DEPENDENCE AMONG MATERIAL PROPERTIES, THEIR TRANSFORMATIONS AND POSSIBLE USE IN ENGINEERING. IN PARTICULAR, THE COURSE IS AIMED TO TRANSFER TO BOTH THE MECHANICAL AND MANAGEMENT ENGINEER THE ABILITY TO READ AND EXPLAIN A STATE DIAGRAM, TO CONDUCT AND DISCUSS THE THERMAL ANALYSIS OF A METAL ALLOY, TO EVALUATE THE STRUCTURAL TRANSFORMATIONS STEEL AND CAST IRON UNDERGO FOLLOWING A THERMAL TREATMENT, TO DRAW THE STRESS-STRAIN CURVES OF A METAL BASED ON THE MACHINE DIAGRAM OF A TENSILE TEST, AS WELL AS TO CHOOSE THE PROPER MECHANICAL TESTING METHOD TO ASSESS ANY MECHANICAL PROPERTY OF INTEREST. BY MEANS OF INDUCTIVE REASONING, THE COURSE IS ALSO AIMED TO TRAIN THE STUDENT ON PROBLEM SOLVING TECHNIQUES, HENCE THEY ARE GUIDED TOWARDS DRAWING OF SIMPLE MODELS OF REAL SYSTEMS, IN ORDER TO CHECK THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE HYPOTHESIS AS A TOOL FOR DECISION SUPPORT. |

BINARY DIAGRAMS. THE IRON-CARBON PHASE DIAGRAM. NUCLEATION AND GROWTH OF GRAINS. DIAGRAMS OF ISOTHERMAL PHASE TRANSFORMATION. SOLID STATE DIFFUSION, SEGREGATION. CLASSIFICATION OF THERMAL TREATMENTS FOR METALS. THERMAL TREATMENTS FOR STEEL, MARTENSITIC TRANSFORMATION AND THERMAL HYSTERESIS, TTT DIAGRAMS. 4) MECHANICAL TESTS (6 H THEORY, 4 H EXERCISE) BRINELL, VICKERS, POLDI AND ROCKWELL HARDNESS TESTS. MICRO-HARDNESS TEST. RESILIENCE TEST. TENSILE TEST: SIZING OF TEST SPECIMENS, RESULTS AND TEST REPORTS. |

TEACHING INCLUDES THEORETICAL CLASSES AND NUMERICAL EXERCISES; NAMELY, THE PROBLEMS ARE INTENDED TO BE DISCUSSED IN COOPERATION BEFORE THE EVENTUAL SOLUTION BY THE PROFESSOR, SO THAT EACH STUDENT CAN PROCEED TO SELF-EVALUATION OF THE PREPARATION. DURING THE COURSE EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS AND INTERACTIVE SIMULATIONS ARE EVEN PROPOSED TO THE PURPOSE OF EASIER UNDERSTANDING OF THE TOPICS. |
