Objectives
To provide the knowledge of the structure (cellular and molecular basis) and functioning of the eukaryotic, prokaryotic and viral cells. Learning the fundamentals of molecular biology: DNA and RNA structure, the DNA duplication mechanisms, transcription and its settings in prokaryotes and eukaryotes; RNA splicing and editing mechanisms; cell cycle control and oncogenesis. Provide the knowledge to understand the transmission mechanisms of heredity and the main inheritance models; provide the basic concepts to understand the behavior of genes in populations; introduce elements of human genetics, approach the student to the analysis and interpretation of genetic data.

Knowledge and understanding
Elements of biology and biochemistry. Proteins and their structures. Structure-function relationship. Nucleic acids (DNA, RNA) and genetic information transfer.

Applied Knowledge and understanding
Abililty to relate the basic biology and genetics issues presented in the course to data processing and analysis operations.
Prerequisites
None.
Contents
•Organizing levels of living matter: Procariots, eukaryotes, viruses.
•Macromolecules: glucides; lipids; Proteins: primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structure; Nucleic acids: RNA and DNA
•The cell: prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, cytoplasmic organelles, nucleus and plasma membrane.
•Duplication of DNA
•The mitosis: various phases and the behavior of chromosomes
•Meiosis: various phases and the behavior of chromosomes.
•Basic differences between mitosis and meiosis
•Mendelian genetics and heredity: from genotype to phenotype; Homozygous and heterozygous concept; Principles of inheritance: dominant, recessive, linked to sexual chromosomes.
•Genes and gene expression: RNA transcription; Structure and function of ribosomal RNA, transfer RNA and messenger RNA, translation genetic code and post-translational modifications;
•DNA: structure and function of genes, chromosomes and human genomes;

•Non-Mendelian inheritance: mitochondrial legacy; Genomic Imprinting.
•Recombinant DNA Techniques as a tool for molecular genetics: concepts of genetic manipulation, gene therapy, cell therapy.
•New Genome and Transcriptome Analysis Techniques: Microarray, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), Whole Exome Sequencing (WES), RNAseq
•Cancer genetics: proto-oncogenes, onco-suppressors, tumor progression.

Teaching Methods
The course will consist in frontal theoretical lectures.
Verification of learning
THE FINAL EXAM IS DESIGNED TO EVALUATE AS A WHOLE THE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONCEPTS PRESENTED IN THE COURSE, AND THE ABILITY TO APPLY SUCH KNOWLEDGE TO RELATE BIOLOGY/GENETICS PROBLEMS TO DATA ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES.

THE EXAM CONSISTS OF AN ORAL INTERVIEW, OF ABOUT 30 MINUTES, IN WHICH THE CANDIDATE IS ASKED TO ILLUSTRATE SOME OF THE CONCEPTS PRESENTED DURING THE LECTURES, AND TO ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS BY THE COMMITTEE AIMED AT VERIFYING IF THE CANDIDATE HAS CLEARLY UNDERSTOOD THE IMPLICATIONS OF THE CONCEPT AND ITS CONNECTIONS TO OTHER CONTENTS OF THE COURSE.
